my brother and his fiance just moved to DC, and her new employer told them that they will reimburse up to $2000 for moving expences. they asked me to help them move, telling me that they would be able to pay me a few hundred for my time. everything else cost them $1400, so theres $600 left that they would be able to give me. however, my brother just called me and said that it has to be paid to a registered business, which i am not. would it be possible to get this money legally? i was wondering if it would be a good idea to just look into what i would need to do to register as a legal business, since if it would only cost a few hundred, it would be worth it if it worked, but they moved a few months ago, so im not sure if that would work out. does anybody have any ideas? thanks for the help.

michael k, totally agree, ive helped family move a number of times and never asked for a dime (at the most i ate free food they bought as a thank you). the only reason im trying to get some money this time, is that it would be at no cost to him. so if anybody wants to advise me to get my bro to pay out of his pocket, you missed the point.

Registered with whom??? You were technically self-employed for the day. Write up a receipt (ie $20.00 per hour @ 10 hours = $200.00) and ask him to submit it to his employer along with his other expenses. Alternatively, you could get a DBA (doing business as) for relatively cheap, then you would have a business name to put on your receipt. But if any of this is going to cause trouble for your brother at work, as him to reimburse you in some other way.

You had an agreement with your brother, not his employer. You are not entitled to any money from his employer, but you may be entitled to money from your brother. If you brother said he would pay you to help him move, he should pay you out of his own pocket. You were not part of a registered business at the time of the move, so there is no way you can get any money from your brother's employer.

Spend thre fee of about $45 top get a city business license, call it "Assist Logistics"; describe your business as : assisting people to move from one area to another by co-ordinating the movement of materiels in a proficient logistical manner....sounds pretty slick eh? Make us proud...

Then send your business license copy to your friend advising him you run a ligitimate business; there is nothing at this point to prohibit you from collecting your fee's; consider it an "emergency credential" of sorts and teachers do it all the time; cities even do whats called a retro-permit for work already done to bring it into compliance with law and standards; America is about fitting in and complying, ever notice how the Government stumbles over those absent "permits" as it is so black-white; give them some grey and see what happens....scwhing....

Your work is as legitimate AS ANYONES, to let it go means to give in, demand thyey follow there own policies; I can bet you theres nothing in their policies regarding a retro-permit of sorts..

Since they told you that they would pay you a "few hundred" for your time, they really should pay you anyway, even if it's out of their own pocket..............

BUT, since they haven't offered to do this, sounds like it would be best to just let it go.

Use this as a lesson and know better next time!

Forget about it,i can't see how you could get it, especially since it was a few months ago.How-ever,your brother could pay you out of his own funds.I would not take money for helping a family member,or friend. What goes around, comes around, your brother could help you some-time.

You can't establish a business after the fact to get money that you already earned. They won't pay it to you. Your brother got free labor.
