Probably because there are so many (too many!) choices. People tend to go along with the popular ones.

Because for the most, people lack courage. To tread the road less travel is frightening, insecure, only attracting pioneers at heart and soul and spirit!
Being a follower is a no-brainer. You forfeit what brain is left to you which can be challenged, take the easy way home, don't stray too far . . and hey, you begin to believe there is a guarantee of a worthwhile adventure!
Either be brain dead through an already nearly intolerable, most of the time interim called Life, or at least feel "the slings and arrows of outrageous times" - which believe me, will never stop or become lesser.
When the interim is over and your body can finally rest, hope for an eternal dirt nap or a particle of diminution of self in an ash tray. After all, you did your homework the hard way or the extremely easy . . or perhaps your dog ate it up! Whatever. The choice is for the one who makes it. Lt the consequences be theirs as well!

Well, following IS a choice.
And it can be a really good one if you follow someone whose clever.
Lone Wolf chooses to live free or die.
Joe Tribesman follows a great chief. Now as one of Geronimo's minions Joe might be a bit less free, but odds are old Lone Wolf is going down, 'cause nobody's got his back.
And that's why so many follow. It's a survival thing.
Many of life choices are 'members only'.

There are too few truly educated, motivated and wealthy people in our world!!! And some people are rich in wealth, but poor in the spirit of giving. There are leaders of countries, and a lot of the leader's are self-motivated and selfish and could care less about their followers. Poor people who lack motivation and education are destined to remain followers. The people who have made it to the top and are good role models are few and far between. Oprah, Bill Gates, Bono, John Bon Jovi, Martha Stewart, and a few others are the ones who have made it to the top and help others. And don't forget Dr. Phil McGraw! Oprah helped him and now he helps others. The way our sytem of government works, and other systems of government, too, only have room for one leader. That is why there are so many followers.
May God bless you.

Maybe some of the choices aren't that great. You also must consider that some people don't really care that much about their religion and other choices they make. It's kinda sad, but true.

People are scared of making wrong choices. So if they follow and fail, they can place blame on someone else rather then themselves even though it is their own fault for following someone into a failing situation.

...Because to implement some of the harder choices one must be spiritually connected with oneself.
It is difficult to concentrate on that endeavor when your stomach has been telling you for days to eat; or the landlord is threatening you with eviction; or you are worried about the candle burning in your child's room because there is no electricy.
We are all at this moment doing what we came to do.
I would urge you to pray for those followers who you believe should be, perhaps, leading in some way.

Following is easy. You always have someone else to blame for any mistakes. It is popular as a convenient way to shirk your responsibility to think independently.

Because some people have no sense of self- they rely on someone else to mold and shape them into something because they don't know how to think for themselves.
