My situation is changing and I won't need my wireless phone for a while. I really like my phone number and would prefer to keep it but just take a break from service for 6 months.

if you're talking about military servie then you just need to contact your provider and show them the deployment papers and they are required to put your account on hold as long as you need. Any other situation and I believe the longest they'll give you is 1 month. I'd recommend calling customer service though, they just might surprise you with what they can do.

If I am reading you correctly, you would like to keep your number but not pay for it (service) for six months? Look at it this way. If you were the phone company would you want to hold a number for someone who wasn't making you any money? Call them and see if you can step down to a lower (cheaper ) level of service. I think that would be the only way to keep your number.
