One thing you should do is report it to the police and then Crime Victums. My mother had her wallet stolen out of her purse at the grocery store. You need a police report to file a claim wiht Crime Victums. They paid my mother back the $50 that was in her wallet and reimbursed her for the fee to get another license. She didn't have much else in there so was lucky in that respect. You did what you had to do with the credit card companies and Social Security.

If your identification was in there, you should not only get new identification, you should formally notify the ID agency that your previous ID has been stolen and you do live at (your address) and requests for replacements for anywhere else are not you. The cards and ID may be used to obtain other credit in your name before they are identified as invalid, so keep an eye on any activity in your credit, such as applications you did not make.

What to do has already been answered, I would add: don't go insane. The vast majority of the time someones purse is stolen the crook keeps the cash and dumps the rest. Odds are they are not after your identity they just wanted the cash.
I am NOT saying you shouldn't take steps to protect your identity, you should. Just don't lose a lot of sleep over it.

Ouch--hope you learned your lesson: Never carry your social security card with you. Don't even carry the number on a separate piece of paper either.
Anyway, I normally hate credit monitoring services, but in this case it may be worthwhile to sign up for one. They generally charge a monthly fee, but you can keep track of your credit report and check for identity theft. Being on top of things and stopping the theft quickly will make things a lot easier than if someone racks up a huge debt in your name.

Call the police, call the bank (which I guess you have done), and call a credit monitoring agency since the people who took your wallet now have all your personal information and you are a prime target for identitiy theft. Ask the bank to change your account numbers. That could help.
Best of luck, and stay safe.

Still make a police report with detailed info. Report it to the three credit bureaus and obtain new cards and ID's. Please be careful and stay sober at all times.
