I would think that the only time that it's it's too late for acceptance and forgiveness is death. We need to realize that everyone has good in them and that even if we don't approve of the way that they live does not mean that they aren't good people. I know parents who don't approve of their children living with their partners even though the children are adults with their own homes and lives, What are the parents gaining by not talking to them?? I think that we hurt ourselves when we refuse to accept people because they are different from us.

What a sad and wonderful letter. How wonderful that she at last found herself able to be accepting. Wonderful for her son and son in law also. How sad to think of the lost years though. I've always believed it's a vague cultural idea some folks have problems with. If they would just take the time to sit and talk with people they will see there fears were groundless.

Sometimes it *is* too late. I'm sad to say, were I Neil, I wouldn't have done all that. I would've welcomed her, but it would've taken me time to forgive her for giving up on me.
Thankfully, my parents did accept me, even though it took them some time. Sadly, most other people (friends excluded) never did. Just imagine I moved out of the country I grew up in in order to live in a friendly and accepting environment.

That's a very sweet story and I'm glad that her child that she wanted nothing to do with, still reached out to her. Shows that we are actually good people, not living a deviant lifestyle. "[We] are human and needs to be loved, just like everybody else does..." It also shows that we shouldn't close doors to people that are different than us, as you never know when you'll need a friend or family member. I hope that someday my full family realizes this... ;)

Hope springs eternal.
Reminds me of my ex, can you imagine his reaction when his 70+ mother came out to him? He didn't have a problem accepting he being a Lesbian, he had a problem with the thought of his mom both having sex and being sexually active at that age. LOL it cracked me completely up, she wanted to discuss gay issues and he was having a case of the willies trying to make her choose another subject. Priceless.

That son is a better person than me. If my mom rejected me for 15 years, as wrong as it might be, I could & would not forgive.
