People like normaility. If something is abbnormal we ignore it. Its like when you choose your groceries - Do you pick the humongous giant odly shaped tomato or the nice round tomato. Its just a way of life. Its sad that thats the way it is but because we've become brainwashed into thinking "everyone has to be normal to be part of society" means that this has influenced the way we act around disabled people.

Stepping outside of the box can be hard but brave, so firstly well done for believing in what you do and feeling strong enough to do so, If as you have suggested someone is medically, physically or mentally different then it's best to take a step back, think about what YOU wont as a person and what YOU need. Then start looking and asking around. The Internet is a fantastic source of information for you to find groups of people that may meet to talk and help people understand an illness etc... Or just for fun.
Remember there is always somebody else out there feeling the same way as you.

Take care xx
You are never alone x

...because society is geared towards conformity. Anything that doesn't conform the ideal is labeled as "different" or "less desireable". It really stinks.
What is right is not always popular and what is popular is not always right...I'm saying that to express the fact that just because the majority looks or acts a certain way doesn't mean it's right. The first poster said that people like normalcy....wha?! Being different does not automatically mean that someone is abnormal, at least, not in my world. He implies that different is negative and I'm not so sure I buy that. Personally, I like all types of people. I make a point to befriend everyone and never isolate anyone - no matter what they look like, how they dress, how they speak, etc.
I guess to answer your question, it's a lonely position to be in b/c many people who think of themselves as "normal" are narrow-minded jack@sses.

Think its been covered really, but as a nation we have been taught that different is bad..

If you're gay you have AIDS
if you're a muslim your a terrorist
If you're thin you're anorexic
If you're wealthy you're stuck up
If you take pride in you're appearance you're vain
If you have a physical disability you're stupid
If you're foreign you're sponging off the state..

blah blah blah,,,

Its Media, we buy into it, subconsciously accept it as 'the norm' we learn intolerance makes s fit in somewhere and so pick and chose which band of soceity we want to belong in..

Sad but true.. If its different, we are scared.

Because like minded people tend to gather together, or the old saying about birds of a feather flock together. If you are different you do not attract the flock.

Unfortunately people are scared of what is different, of what they don't know or understand.
That's why you often see people acting oddly around, or sometimes avoiding a disabled person. Such a situation puts them out of their comfort zone.
This fear is sometimes also at the root of racial intolerance.

because many people are insecure with themselves and don't have it in them to be accepting of others who are different...it would be easier to turn them away for these people.
