If you just want to sit and make music, and quickly, just get a guitar chord book and learn a few, basic, open chords. Then find a song book containing some of your favorite pieces and play the chords shown on the top of the staff.

Within a few minutes, you could be playing recognizable songs, especially if you sing the lyrics.

Then, as you get better, you will learn more songs and more chords. Eventually, you should find someone with a similar interest in the type of songs you like. Play with them and you will get better still. You will learn from each other. Find even more people to jam with and your learning will be accelerated. Playing with more advance musicians teaches you even more.

If you actually want to learn music, and music theory, then it will take you much longer to learn and play your favorite tunes.

I started about 45 years ago. I bought Bert Weedon's 'Play In A Day' tutor book. First I learned how to tune the guitar, then the chord shapes and how to change them, then simple tunes like 'Coming Round The Mountain'. I know many people struggle to hold chords but to me it was very easy. Within a short time I was playing in a group and I'm still performing 45 years later. I also give guitar lesson, I've got one tonight.

My advice is to learn all the notes and chord shapes and lots and lots of practice. Get a tutor or buy a book like I did.

Get yo' self a guitar first, my dear.
Then, You should check out music stores, Best Buy, or Borders for books, DVDs, and CDs that teach you to play the guitar. Handbooks that Fender has put out are excellent.

one way is to find a book with the basic chords. practice holding your guitar. and practice ..practice. get tips from others. it is a little hard at first for motivation. do not worry if others are better right now. you will be in a little time. good luck. and remember all things start very slow.

I just started learning from a book yesterday. Read everything CAREFULLY. Do everthing AS YOU READ it. or it can get very confusing. I was stuck on the first exercise for 2 hours because I didn't do everything as I read.
