I think with two characters like Ron and Hermione there would not have been a better time than Ron showing empathy for house-elves. Remember Hermione absolutely deplores how they are treated and wants to free them (much to their dismay)
Ron showing a change of heart and thinking immediately showed Hermione how much she in fact loved him.
I knew they would end up together, just a matter of time. It was set up in Book 6, then followed through in Book 7. Harry was right though, "Is this the moment?"

I didn't think it was weird at all. They already had feelings for each other since a long time and it was getting really extreme in the last book. Hermione always was against the slavery of the house elves and when Ron said that it was just too much for her. She was so overwhelmed with emotion.

For several of the previous books Hermione was unhappy with Ron's apparent disregard for Elf welfare. But when the big battle was about to start, Ron was actually concerned for the safety of the Elves, so Hermione was emotional and was very happy that Ron really did care about "lesser" creatures. So she kissed him. Sure, it was a bit sudden, but in keeping with the characters.

I kind of figured that they'd kiss somewhere along the line, but that WAS a bit out of the ordinary. I assumed it would be more romantic or something, because THAT was a weird place to stick it in. Of course, they are dealing with a lot of stuff at the moment, and like Ron says, there might not really be another chance to do it. There kind of in a 50/50 spot of life or death at the moment.

It made perfect sense. Remember how Hermione struggled so hard for elf rights with her SPEW club? Remember how she was always trying to get other people to treat elves with more respect, to treat them as people instead of sub-human slaves? Remember how Ron, raised as a wizard, never gave elves much thought or consideration?
Therefore, Ron's sudden but sincere display of concern for the house-elves touched Hermione very deeply, and she felt a great rush of love - well, she's always loved him, but for him to agree, of his own accord, something that she believed in so deeply, was very touching. I though it was perfect.

okay, first of all, i think you might have made a mistake, (don't know if you know or not) jk rowling isn't a HE. and not everyone in slytherine left, the main evil ones stayed, even if a couple of them weren't truly evil. about regulus, severus, and slughorn, yes, i think that's what she was going for. about the 100% evil thing, no, even voldemort wasn't 100% evil, usually 100% evil people don't care for ANYONE, but voldemort cared for nagini (such good friends they make, snakes). and i have a few questions about the book myself, like who the heck is draco's wife?! i can't wait for that harry potter encyclopedia!!
