I know the RAF are flying their helicopters in and doing a magnificent job, but where the hell is the Army?

cattle rustler: You seem to know what you're writing about so it's more than a little worrying if we have only 500 soldiers to spare.
Whatever happened to the old civil defence corps?

samantha t: Those lazy firemen you took a swipe at are working 24 hours per day with little or no rest to bring relief to those desperate people affected. They deserve a little more respect from someone who sits warm and cosy in front of her PC writing carping criticisms of people she knows nothing about.

Everyone: This question is in no way a criticism of our soldiers who have my total admiration for the way they do whatever our government orders them to.
It is just that I have not seen a single soldier involved in the rescue and recovery work that is going on.
Rosie: There are times in a national emergency such as we are witnessing when standown is a luxury no one can afford.

I live in Gloucester and they are here hun, as are the RAF, the Navy and firefighters from all over the country. Trust me, from someone who is affected directly I can tell you that everyone here is so so so grateful for all of their hard work over the last few days, it's down to them that we have our power back and that makes so much difference to us all. Now at least we can boil water to cook with and we are not having to wash in cold water. Yes it's a pain having no water, but having no water and no power makes it so much harder. It really makes you realise just how much you take it for granted being able to turn on a tap and get water or turn on a switch and have light.

Iraq, afghanistan, bosnia, falkland islands, covering for lazy firemen and the list goes on...
I hear they are looking for volunteers though, anyone interested?
tit for tat, so they are now covering for the army? that is a turn up for the books, no doubt they will want another 25% pay rise for it, at which point the army will have to stick a broomup it's collective bum and sweep the floor while doing their job and their own, plus anyone else's who can't be bothered.speaking of sitting in front of P.C's warm and cosy and carping on about people they know nothing about, I refer to your original post, what do you mean 'where the hell are they?' they would be the ones who are working 24 hours a day, with little rest, for 6 months at a time, getting shelled and mortared for little thanks or appreciation. By the way, my husband has just returned from his 2nd tour of Iraq and I have done my time in the army...what do you do for a living?

Our Soldiers are fighting everybody Else's war at Politicians behest.

The RAF well involved as said.

Special thanks should go to the Civilian Services, (not the Civil Service). The Fire Personnel are doing a fantastic job in the front line, plus many others.

Lay off, Barrie G. The Army is in Iraq, Afghanistan and Sierra Leone. Those who are not have been given a well deserved stand down before they start training to go back to these areas. I suggest your assembled Firepersons get on with it. You seem to have enough spare time.

First we have to be given permission and be requested to help, if that has been given we then need some soldiers to help as we only have 500 men spare at the moment, they are on spearhead (which means they have to be ready to be deployed outside of the UK at a moments notice), because all the others are either deployed on Ops, just got back from Ops or just going on Ops we don't have any men too help.

Believe me it's not that we don't want to help we just can't as we don't have anyone.

8 cutbacks in 10 years imposed on the armed forces by New Labour. That's where the army's gone.

They're all in Iraq and Afghanistan and thin on the ground there too. I have relatives in the army out there and, by all accounts, numbers of new army recruits have fallen drastically.

The army is overstretched fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. There's nobody left at home but if they r there taking a well deserved rest.

Afghanistan, Iraq and RIP

Great isnt it? We could be invaded tomorrow and all we have are a few helicopters to defend us.
EDIT
CattleRustler - I dont think anyone blames the soldiers for not being there to help, we know they would if they could.
