Proxima Centauri is the nearest star to earth and is four light years or twenty three million million miles away (sun is just eight light minutes away).

Proxima Centauri is 4.22 light years away, Alpha Centauri A and B (not the same thing as Beta Centauri) are both 4.35 light years away. The three stars, collectively, are known as the Alpha Centauri system, The next nearest star is Barnard's Star, at 5.96 light years away.

Presently, this is Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf too faint to be seen with the naked eye, which may be in orbit around Alpha Centauri A and B (which are both about as bright as the sun), presently 4.22 light years away. In 9000 year, Barnard's star, another red dwarf, will be closer to us than Proxima Centauri is.

Proxima Centauri, about 4.32 light years away. It's part of a trinary star system, along with Alpha and Beta Centauri.

The SUN!
If you are out in the galaxy flying around your point would be to look back for the sun - whose star can be seen from a long way off...it might have another name by the time humans get this far out.
Dratt! He editted it and said not to mention the Sun!
Then it must be Rigal...I don't know how far it is but its very bright.

I give thumbs up to all the Proxima AND Alpha answers, because I think it is overly technical to not mention that Proxima and Alpha are near each other in space and are though to be part of the same star system.
I even accidentally gave thumbs up to "The Game", who's black hole statement is just wrong.
