when trimming how far down do you cut the leaf? an can u just cut th e burnt part so u have half a leaf?

If they are 'burnt' by frost just cut them down to a couple of inches above the ground once the frosts have past.

If they are burnt because of sunburn (came from shade to sunny area) just cut the leaf off. Cannas are pretty indestructible, once established they continue to shoot up new stems regularly. Mine take up to 110 deg F in full sun and don't burn. Even the drought didn't damage the leave and yes this included canna Australia.
