I'm going top do you a favor and take away some of your heat. I was reading Parade magazine yesterday it contained an article about how kids from the famous baseball town of San Pedro De Marcoris in the Dominican Republic are trying desperately to make it in MLB like Sosa and Soriano have.
I found the article interesting for a couple of reasons.
The first was the compare and contrast photo inside. On the left was a picture of a barefoot kid waiting on a pitch whilst standing the middle of a dirt field with a pair of denim jeans being use as home plate.
On the opposite page is a picture of Sosa , Soriano & Cano in their clean white uniforms playing MLB field. There is nothing subtle about what the photos' are trying to say, Although it did occur to me that the photo was staged bc I'm pretty sure that Sosa & Soriano & maybe Cano sent some money home to build better friggin' ballfields for the kids'
The other thimg that occured to me was that black people of Caribbean and Latino backrounds are not regarded as African- American. Which I find really interesting
To my uneducated white boy eyes ,if you stood Gary Sheffield next to Alfonso Soriano and asked me which race they belonged to [other than human] I would have to say black and I would be wrong and I'm quite sure why
Apparantly black people from Carribean and Latin countries have dropped the "African" and simply preferred being identified with their country of origin while their American cousins have not.
So maybe Sheffield's rant was more about semantics than actual substance.
The Yankees are not a racist organization. How could they be? They work in the most culturally diverse city on the friggin planet .
Not mention a city that contains more social activists per square mile than any other city in America does.Do you honestly believe that socialy active New Yorkers would tolerate a racist Yankee organization ? I don't

To call the Yankees racist is an incredibly idiotic statement. Gary Sheffield is uninformed, ignorant idiot. And we loved him in '97 in FLA. There is no racism in deciding which players are hired and which get playing time. Why is it that there aren't more blacks in MLB? Cause they just aren't playing baseball. Do the count, most of the recognizable black MLB players today only play because daddy or uncle was a ball player(ie, Griffey,Bonds,Fielder, even Sheffield). I was on a traveling team and went to a few cities when I was a kid, and could count how many black players there were with my two hands, and half of them were black hispanics! There may be isolated insidents but you better believe it's a two way door. I think the NBA is racist because there aren't enough white & hispanic players. j/k of course

If your question is a result of Gary Sheffield's rant about Joe Torre than you let him affect your thinking which is what he wants. Sheffield isn't happy if he's not in the media spotlight. It's all about him.
The Yankees have never been racist as is reflected by the number of minorities on the team. They may not be African American laden but there are other minorities on the team. You should ask the Mets Coach, Willie Randoplh, if he thinks the Yankees are Racist.

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! We're talking about an organization where half of the team is hispanic, and is managed by an Italian-American. Steinbrunner also gave one of the first and highly publisized huge contracts of the free agency era to a black man, Reggie Jackson.
The Yankees, and their fans don't care what you look like, or where you come from. They only care if you can WIN and Gary Sheffield couldn't do that. That's the reason why he got treated the way he did, he didn't deliver. It had NOTHING to do with race.

Some people , probably like yourself, can make ANYTHING racist.
1. Johhny Damon. ( White, but part native American)
2. Derek Jeter. (Half black)
3. Abreu (Latino)
4. A-rod- Latino
5. Matsui - Asian
6. Posado- Latino
7. Cano- Latino
8. CAbera- Latino
9. Andy Phillips ( the only fully white guy in their line up right now.
Yes they must really hate players that are not white in that lineup.

no how are they racist, they have various races out there on the field with posada, a-rod, rivera just a few of the hispanic people. they have various asians with igawa and wang. they also have white guys there too with people like pettitte and clemens. for those that think that they are racist against black b/c of what sheffield said about torre, here's my argument. sheffield has been with 7 teams b/c he is a trouble maker and not a pleasant guy in the clubhouse. the yankees are in no way racist. by the way iceman, damon is part asian as well.

OF COURSE NOT! I'm not just saying that because i'm a yankees fan. Think about it....Gary Sheffield made the accusation. He's been known to make false accusations throughout his career! Kenny Lofton, who barely played for the Yankees when he was with them due to injuries, confirmed Sheffield's accusations. Because of these circumstances, you cannot rely on their word. Throughout Joe Torre's career, he has NEVER been accused of being a racist.

While I'm not a Yankees fan, those accusations are a load of crap.
All the Yanks care about is winning, and they'll field whatever team gives them the best chance of doing that. That's why I respect them so much, even if I'm not a fan.
