They don't have to have your original - it can be a certified copy. Go online and find the register of deeds for the county you were married in and request a certified copy (they will put a stamp/seal it). Most of these cost about $10.00 and they will mail it to you.

I believe the original is notarized or embossed stamped in some way that eliminates the chance of forgery. With identity theft on the rise, it's an understandable request. I wouldn't worry about it. They will send it back to you. Or, you could always go down there in person to save yourself the worry.

they need the original because it has a stamp on it that you can really see with a copy I forget what its called but it has pushed up up the paper in the form of the stamp I think its called embossed I don't know if that's how you spell it but they will send it back to you when they are done. they just need it to see its real that stamp has to be on there

They'll send it back don't worry about it....but if you must do it by mail try to send it registered mail just to be on the safe side.....I had to send out my daughter's Birth Certificate to change her name and that was SOOO hard but they do return your paper work.....send it registered mail

I suggest you take time to go to the Social Security office, if you don't you can not sign ANY documents using your married name.

they need the original to verify it is not a fake...why cant you physically go to the ss office in your city? that's what I did when I changed my name...

They need to make it as difficult and painful as possible to collect any money from them. If they can discourage people from filing, then it helps save money.
