I know it may die out as the sun dies out. The sun's life expectancy is about 9 billion years. 4.5 billion years have passed since then. We as humans might have contributed to it, but I don't know for sure. Along with the big bang theory, ending the world and universe in an explosion. I think as the sun dies out it engulfs the universe and the world ends along with it.

The Sun is gently converting all its hydrogen into helium by nuclear fusion. Over time this has cause the Sun to heat up. It is now thought to be 25% hotter than when it first switched on to main sequence fusion, about 4.5 billion years ago.
Dr James Lovelock's 'Gia' theory suggests that 'life' (through photocynthosis and other mechanisms) has been modifying the Earths temperature relative to an increase in solar energy, in the past to keep the world warm enough for its self but as the solar temperature increased cool enough. However, in about a billion years the solar tempereture will to too high. The oceans will boil away because of a run-a-way greenhouse effect and Earth will probably resemble present day Venus. At this point all life in Earth will cease.
The planet itself will last a further 3 billion year or so untill the Sun runs out of hydrogen. At this point it starts fusing helium to produce larger atoms like carbon and it becomes a Red Giant Star whose diameter will be about the same as the Earth orbit and the planet will probably go down in flames.
If anyone thinks that at present mankind can destroy the planet they are over optamistic of our abilities. Planet are tough they live in a very violent universe.

Einstein Quote We know what weapons the First and Second World wars were fought with and we have a very good idea what weapons the Third World War will be fought with. But the fourth World war will be fought with sticks and stones. Or words to that effect.
Mother Earth will be around for a while yet ,but she is very ill and will need a bit of time to recover from the crimes committed against her.
God knows but he won't tell us.

There is a theory that an alien life-form that has been monitoring us for years, throwing various meteorites and placing particularly nasty chaps in charge of countries, stops the show simply by number of complaints from a certain planet in the south sector and charges mankind with: Being the dominant species on the planet out of control through unbounded consumerism, and shuts down the planet ready for the next species hopeful in: "Big World: The Intergalactic Reality Show".

"not with a bang ,but with a wimper" as a poet once wrote .No matter what happens on earth life will still continue,as it has done for the last 500 million years. It has had many stages in that time ,what wiv the dinosaurs and all .Our sun is a middle aged star and has another 500 million years to go.The end will see the sun swell to a large mass engulfing everything as far as jupiter. Enjoy your life cos we aint gonna be there when that happens ,and I am sure that who ever is around at that time will be able to sort it out

Some say the earth will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favour fire.
But if it has to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is just as great
And would suffice.

With a bang. A big loud bang. Just like a huge firecracker. I'm pretty sure I have a previous engagement that day. Hate to have to miss it.

Quietly, with no humans to witness it! We will have long gone from some super-virus. The sun will cool and Earth will fizzle out.
