as I was reading about Lily and Petunia on the swings as girls, and then Petunia wanting so badly to go to Hogwarts, I kept thinking Petunia was going to show up in the end with new magical powers....was this just a rumored writing in the book, or did Rowling change it along the way?

Petunia wanted to go to Hogwarts and have magical powers. But when it became obvious that she never would, and after her run in with the young Snape, she lashed out and hated all things magic.

I wondered that. I remember reading before the new book came out that someone would come out with magical powers late in life. I, first, thought it would be Petunia, but realized it would more likely have been Filch. As I read it, neither happened, and I didn't see an instance where anyone had magic late in life. Weird. But as the others said, the childhood Petunia just wanted to go to Hogwarts too.

Rowling has said many times that Petunia would have no magical powers. Her and Lily were so close as children that she wanted to stay with her, even at Hogwarts. She was upset that she was not allowed to go and that is why she turned on all things magic even her sister. She must have still loved Lily deeply as she took Harry in to keep his protection in order and even at the end she wanted to say something to him but couldnt bring herself to do so.

I think Rowling never intended for Petunia to have any magical abilities - she just wanted to show why Petunia later hated Hogwarts/magic/Lily so much. Petunia both feared and envied Lily's "freakish" talents, and secretly wanted to have those talents too, but when she was refused, she was so hurt and angry that she hated anything to do with magic ever after.

no petunia just wanted to go to hogwarts with her sis but she couldn't go so she started thinking the lily was a freak.

I think that Petunia and Lily loved eachother so much that Tuney didn't want to be separated from herfor 10 months every year. They seemed pretty close.

Petunia never had magicial powers. She was just jealous that Lily was getting more attention, and also that her best friend/sister would be leaving her.

no. petunia was a muggle......i don't think she has powers...she just wanted to be with her sister at hogwarts.

haha thats why she never spoke kindly of her sister. She wanted it too. WHATEVER i never liked her. I did feel bad for snape though.
