My daughter has colitis. I think there must be a natural way to help it, and have read some about it, but I would like to know if anyone has had experience or success with natural remedies. I have heard of using fish oil, other vitamins, low carbohydrates, etc. What have you used that helped? My daughter is 19, goes to the doctor, but has a lot of trouble with this. If you have found any dietary changes that helped, or other, tell what it was, and how long it took for a change to occur. I realize there is a lot of writing about this, but I would like to know if you have had any actual results or experience with this?

I suspect that every case of colitis is a little different.
Mainly to check are food allergies, particularly eliminate gluten (wheat, processed food). A NAET practitioner could help figure out exactly what allergies exit.
There are also supplements called monoatomics made from aloe vera -- they are expensive but very good for treating intestinal distress. Aloe vera juice straight up is good but the monoatomic made from it is much more concentrated so much more effective.
Good luck !

With some folks, the colitis is caused by a food allergy. It occurs most commonly when someone is sensitive to wheat glutens. Eliminate this & the allergic reaction disappears. First get her tested.

Hi, no doubt you have looked up the varied and numerous natural remedies and it can be overwhelming, I have probably tried them all at one time or another. I believe during flare up colitis runs its course whatever you do. Reducing wheat products, keeping food intake low and simple i.e. baked fish, chicken, veg, brown rice, no processed foods, keeping the bowel going etc can help. But sadly there are more theories than solutions. Your daughter might try keeping a food diary, when she is having a bad day she could look to eliminate food from the day before from her diet.
Actually Dr Gillian Mckeith talks sense when it comes to bowel care.

Hi. I'm 22 and was diagnosed with Crohn's disease last August which as I'm sure you already know is another form of IBD. I tried drinking Complan twice a day to get extra calories to A) put some of the weight I lost back on and B) for vitamins and to make me feel less drained. I can't say I've tried taking any fish oils but I also tried to figure out which things were upsetting me in my diet and cut them out completely. Good examples for me are coffee, milk, beer and a lot of spirits, brocolli, steak, and spicy foods. I know some of these are quite common place and I would imagine your daughter has probably tried cutting these out already but I hope if she hasn't it helps in at least a little way. Best wishes! :-)

Hi, have you thought about Aromatheraphy oils?

Treating illness with highly concentrated oils extracted from plants is known as aromatherapy. The Medicinal use of plant oil is recorded in some of the earliest chinese writing. The Ancient Persians, too valued flower waters distilled from roses and orange blossom, and used them both as cosmetics and as remedies for sickness. In the 11th century, the persian philosopher and physician Avicenna refined the distillation process and produce much purer essential oil.

Oils for mind and body
The oils fall into three general groups
Those which invigorate the body and raise the spirits
Those which tone and regulate the main bodily functions
Those which gave a sedative, calming effect on body and mind of the better-known.

LEMON-GRASS Toning, refreshing, Indigestion, oil skin, Colitis, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, antiseptic, arthritis, astringent, athlete's foot, bruises, cellulite, circulatory stimulant, colitis, deodorant, diuretic, enlarged pores, febrifuge, fever, headaches, indigestion, insect repellent, jet lag, moth repellent, muscular aches, muscle tone, oily hair, oily skin, raises blood pressure, sedative, skin conditioner, sprains, toning and vertigo.

Safety Precautions: This oil is nontoxic and will not irritate the skin or sensitize it. Lemongrass Oil should NEVER be put directly on the skin. It should always be mixed with another oil such as a carrier oil. Serious burning can occur from direct concentrated contact. This oil is ten times as strong as normal grapefruit oil and should be used with extreme care

Mix 6-8 drops of lemon-grass into 5 tablespoons of carrier oil (sunflower oil). Use as a massage oil to be rubbed into the effected areas, or inhalation by means of an oil burner.

For bath oil - mix 8-10 drops of lemon-grass into 6-8 tablespoons of full or semi-skimmed milk. Add to bath water and soak for approxmately 15 to 20 mintues before bedtime.

ONLY buy lemon-grass as a pure essential oil to use for these purposes. The oil will come in a small dark coloured bottle and the label will say, PURE ESSENTIAL OIL OF LEMON-GRASS.
The oil can be brought from most health stores and some chemists.
