Yes I know it has been raining hard!

Is it the effects of Global Warming as the gov. and the greenies and liberals would have us believe or

Is it the amount of building and structural changes to the terrain that have largely caused it.

Forget about the floodplains for now, Look at the amount of Trading Estates, Supermarkets, Housing estates, roads etc that have been built.

All of these cover the land in concrete or tarmac and take away the natural drainage of the land.
They force rainwater into runaways that are not a natural part of the geography.

Look at all of the "Polly tunnels" now covering acres and acres of land.

Look at all of the intensive farming going on where farmers are building fast irrigation into their fields to allow rain water to run off as quickly as possible.

Are these not the real reasons for the cause of such severe floods. The government would have us think "Not" as it suits their tax policies to blame global warming.

What do you think

Hi mordent

I did not say pollytunnels are making it rain more. The polly tunnels, like the concrete and tarmac, are covering natural rain soakaway areas.

hasbeen

There was a government minister on tv two days ago who stated that these are the rains we usually get every 100 to 150 years.
It's not the first time, but it is the first time these exceptional rains have tried to fall onto a groung which is covered in builings, roads, pollytunnels, crop fields covered in blankets etc etc.

To all of the "City dwellers" who have answered.

Go out into the countryside ( I mean the real country side not Hyde flippin Park)
Have a look at modern day farming methods and what has been done to the land.
Take a look at the huge industrial estates that have been built. Look within your cities at the amount of building on the outskirts.

i woujldnt be sure it's global warning they say 'in living memory' there's never been a record of this but living memory isnt that long. i'm sure it happens every couple of hundred years or so. i'm sure the government would like us to think it's us though, you're right, they're already mentioning it in their news bulletins in subtle ways.

The reason, is that there is no fixed high pressure system over the Uk, as is often the case over the summer months. So saying, it may well be also down to a weakening Gulf Stream (which could mean the start of "interesting winters" too). As for modern building practises (not the completely daft idea of Brown's building on flood-plains btw .... another laugh all together) obviously they do multiply the problem but are not the cause in this instance.

It's usually water.

Seriously a jet stream with winds over 200 hundred miles an hour is usually to the north of UK it is now to the south bringing area of low air pressure one after another. Also there is a natural sea air current system off the West Coast of South America which every few years cause chaos in the weather systems of the rest of the world. These two coupled to-gether have had the effect of causing the present weather situation. No consolation for those affected but there it is.

I'm sure someone will be shouting about it being caused by global warming but i think not

I live in Carlisle. After our floods of 2005 had eventually drained away , a good 75% of the blame lied in the cities drainage system.
It was reported that it was the original drainage system put in place in the Victorian times. ( 1900's ish) that was to blame !!!!
The flood defences have since been heightened, and extensive work is being carried out to modernise the drainage system.

I would imagine the whole of the country will be the same. Running Victorian drains. (Makes you proud to be British and pay inflated Water rates/Council taxes.)

The phrase ' Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted ' springs to mind.
So be warned!!!!!! Plenty of road works will be coming your way as the new water pipes are re-laid !!!!!!!

It's a combination of them both. Even those who believe global warming is a vast left wing conspiracy can hardly deny that it's rained a hell of a lot more than it should do in July. This rain then runs off all these non-porous surfaces (tarmac etc) and doesn't sink into the ground, which swells rivers faster.

However - WHY is it raining so much more than usual. This is the wettest June AND July on record - and July's not even over. Polytunnels aren't making it rain more - they're just exacerbating the effects.

It is the Pacific ocean along the coast of south America,it is particularly cold at the moment and this is allowing vast amounts of water to be drawn up into the upper atmosphere, this in turn has effected the jet stream, the 30,000 ft high stream of high velocity wind to move very slightly south from it`s normal position over Iceland to a position stretching from Biscay up to Sweden, this has allowed a lot of wet weather to also move south and deposit the rain upon us.....

I agree with you. If there is going to be more weather like this in the future, the goverment
are going to have to do something about the
drainage system. Larger culverts must be a priority. I wonder when they last built any of them!!

I feel it is a combination of large amounts of rain coupled with structures (i.e. roofs, blacktop, etc.) because the runoff from the structures and roads causes whatever land it runs off to becomes much more saturated and causes much more flooding.
