there is a little over 300 Disney and cartoon small chapter books for kids (that are in great condition) we have in the garage and are trying to get ride of.
we were going to put them in a big box outside with a sign that says "FREE", but then my mom had a better idea, to donate them.
so do you think we should donate them to a salvation army or goodwill thrift store or to the library in town? and why?
which will benefit more?
i'm trying to make the right choice :)
give me your opinion
thanks!<3
ps. please pick just one place, don't say "donate 100 to all of them" we are trying to get rid of them fast to a good cause(better than throwing them away) a.s.a.p, so we can only make one stop! :)

I would donate them to the library. At the library there is a 100% chance that everybody will see the books, and many more children will read them than if you simply went to a salvation army, where they may never be used by more than one child. Plus, when the books become so outdated it is pitiable, the library will sell them to make money! You are contributing both financially and educationally to your community and your library!

I would say the public library. When the library in my town takes books on donation, if they don't already have enough copies of the book, they will put it on the shelf for people to check out. If the book is in bad shape, outdated, or they already have ample copies, they will sell it at a very low price in the "bargain basement".

Though I like the Salvation Army and Goodwill, donating to the library will probably allow the for the most use of the books. Rather than one lucky soul getting the books, you get to share them with the community. Even if the library does end up selling the books, the money stays within, and supports, your community.

Can I make another suggestion? How about a children's hospital or a hospital that has a childrens ward? Otherwise I would say Goodwill. My husband is a manager at a Goodwill store and they are a non profit that helps provide many resources and jobs for people who may otherwise not be able to have a job. Even with my husband as a manager of a Goodwill, I would try a children's hospital first!

I agree with the majority here for the library. Goodwill, though the funds go to a very good cause, will only sell them for someone to use them once. At a library, they can be reused over and over again by many people at no cost.

Have you thought of maybe donating them to a hospital for their pediatric unit.....or maybe an orphanage....or even to a women's shelter as women often resort to such shelters with their children when they're trying to escape from bad situation or are down on their luck. The library will lend books out - though libraries are not always accessible to everyone. Goodwill or Salvation Army will sell them and make profit off of them, whereas other places could really use them. Whichever you choose - I think you're doing a great thing.

Libraries first, then Goodwill or Salvation Army.

I would say the local library. I think they will be used much more. Otherwise someone else would get them, their kids would grow up, and they would end up doing the same thing you are. At the library they will be read so much more... :) I would just give them all to the library.

Give them to the library or to a local womens shelter or family outreach program. There are many less fortunate that would enjoy reading them to their children. They need to be enjoyed without someone else selling them for profit..

I would just go to Freecycle on yahoo groups in your area

and give them away to anyone who wants them
to keep out of landfill

They are heavy so that is what I would do.

You can sell them on Ebay too.

I don't think the library will want them. They don't want books here unless they are having the once a year sale. Ask first before picking up those heavy things.

When I freecyle. I post that i am leaving the stuff at the curb. I don't wait for anyone to email me or anything. Just leave it out in front on the house and email freecycle. Everything is always gone when I do that.

I just like to keep stuff out of landfill. If they want to sell it or what ever that is great with me.

even a ten year old mattress was taken by someone. freecycle

30 year old tvs was taken.

Definately the library! Little kids would love to be able to read all those books for free!
