I have a 30 gallon salt water tank and I'm using one of those hang on pumps that runs the water through a filter and dumps it back in. (Yes I know I should be using something better... leave me alone!)

But anyways, how high can I keep my water level? Right now it's about 2.5 in. from the top of the glass. That's low enough so the bubbles from the water return reach the bottom. Is that about as much as I need? Or can I fill it even more?

It's just a single 4 in. fish inside.

Ok, let me see if I am understanding this right. The water would actually be getting more air if the level was higher?

You can fill it to the top edge with no problems. The water motion will still provide more than adequate aeration.

Keep the water high enough so that there is about 1/4 of an inch between the water and the out flow of the filter. This will give you the necessary water agitation and still have it look reasonable.

I like to set the level even with the pump outlet. this circulates the water the best. it is the circulation of water that absorbs o2 not the bubbles introduced to it. Oxygen comes from the surface. The more surface exposed the more air

you can fill it to the bottom of the rim so no space is seen between the rim of the tank and the water line. the only advantage of not filling all the way would be more water presure would fall out of the return breaking more surface tension of the water allowing more light to get in and less build up of waste floating on the surface.
