Your questions always take time to feel, & to think. (Probably why I'm almost always on the second page!) I was just feeling--thinking that a "wastland" has never had a negative connotation for me. It's vast space to the horizon, uninhabited by humans, where the sky never ends. Peaceful, serene. A place where I could open completely to my inner self. As to survival, water, food & so on, we put some effort into getting that anywhere, don't you think? I'm certain I'd see beauty in a wastland. No prison could EVER be so beautiful that I'd choose to be confined, & lose my freedom. I'd just like to add that there would be more freedom in a wastland than the cacophonous & restrictive city, or even suburbs.

I like your new avatar, somber but imposing. Note my new nickname! (Check my 360--I actually posted something there!)

I would want to be a Free wasteland than a beautiful Prison, because a Prison is not Beautiful inside, on the other hand a Wasteland is open spaces where you are free as a Bird and can become one with Nature.

I'll take the free wasteland. The aesthetic visions of the prison are fleeting. Freedom allows you the choice to make what you want of where you are. Just because something isn't "beautiful" to look at, does not mean that the beauty there is non-existant. If you are free to think- then you are free to find the beauty that is not obvious. Freedom and to have free-will is something that is insurpassably beautiful in itself. Therefore the fact that it is a wasteland is obsolete. A prison is always confinement. No matter what it looks like. Hope this makes sense!! :)

"prisionerofdepths" has a good answer to this question.

But just the same one can be in a beautiful wasteland or a free prision.
Although those seem like oxymorons, so too beautiful prision and free wasteland are oxymorons.
If you think about it, if your conjectured relms are possible, then so are those other two.

Freedom comes with provisions only. Wastelands have no provisions. If prison bars were made of gold would that abate any of the anguish?

When someone makes sense of one of these hypotheticals, it would be taylored to the individual fantacy,
So this is an artistic question; I do not see any metaphysical significance in this question.

Don't we live in a beautiful prison? It's called Earth.

But hypothetically I would rather live in a free wasteland if there was clean water, some sort of clothing to protect me from the sun and a source of food that would last me as long as I lived.

Depends...

If the beautiful prison is Neuschwanstein Castle I wouldn't mind living there...

But seriously I think it's better to be free anywhere than in prison anywhere. If you are imprisoned and can not leave and therefore are not in control of your life, then no matter how beautiful the prison may be, you can not truly live your life. If you are free even if it is in a wasteland, at least you are in control and able to live your life as you choose.

Most of us are in a prison of our own making in some sense. Freedom (risk, the unknown) can be frightening. Sometimes we choose safety and security, even though it means missing out on many exciting opportunities...

Come to think of it, perhaps I do live in a beautiful prison, in a sense. I have a beautiful house but I am a slave to it. To pay the mortgage I have to work at a job that I despise...the things you own own you...I'm not willling to give everything up for total freedom. I suppose somewhere in the middle would be nice. A taste of freedom and security...

It is easy to say free wasteland, but what would I be free? I would be free to go where I want, but out of necessity be forced to travel in certain directions (e.g. to find food and water). Would I have anytime to think, create, play, etc. or would I have no such opportunity. Would my mind be free to think any thoughts or would it be filled from day to day with developing strategies, just to survive. Which is really the prison?

Still, perhaps because I'm a prisoner to my biases, I'll take the wasteland, but I think I'm making a mistake! :-)

A Free wasteland because I'm free and a beautiful prison basically isn't beautiful.

I'd rather be free even if it was a wasteland. I can't imagine there being any inner peace in a prison no matter how beautiful it was. Freedom would allow me to try and change the negative circumstances of my surroundings...impossible to do in prison.
