If you are overly concerned - don't travel alone. Traveling alone can be refreshing and you meet more people, but criminals also will pray on people who are buy themselves. They have more opportunities. Especially petty thieves.
Always look for your exits and escape routes. Like in Aircraft, hotels, restaurants, and other crowded spaces.
Look up the alerts your country and travel info groups list about other countries on their websites. There are also tips there.
Be cautious and picky on what you eat and drink. At home you are immune to local bacteria, it is easier to catch a little bug from germs when you are halfway around the world.

Having traveled to a few places outside & inside North America, these are the best suggestions I have found to date:
When travelling, if possible, stay with a group, or a buddy. Before travelling, make sure your immunizations are up to date. Always find out if any travel advisories have been issued for your destinations. When travelling, keep a small bag with you with the following contents: 1) A toiletries kit 2) Some small bandages 3) A favourite book 4) A change of underwear & socks 5) Some non-perishable snack food 6) A small bottle of water and a facecloth 7) A dictionary for the local language 8) A map of the city
9) Contact phone numbers (friends/family/transport/embassy)
10) Headache/pain relief medication.
Never travel with a camera or an mp3 player visible (even the headphones!). Have a hidden money location on you with some travelers cheques (American Express is best) & $200 of local and $100 departure point currency. Always keep your passport, immunization record(s), personal i.d. and any travel documents with you. Never accept any gifts, do another person a favor, or follow any instructions except those by uniformed officials at designated locations. Know the location of your hotel/resort when taking local transport. Never pack anything in a suitcase that you cannot afford to replace upon arrival. Sleep on the flight/train/bus ride if possible.
If something goes missing, don't panic. Get a manager's phone number, and replace the missing item(s) .
That's about the most useful things you can do to protect yourself.
