There was a small settlement called Madeley Wood, in the area where Ironbridge now stands, before the bridge was built to link Coalbrookdale and Broseley in 1779 by Abraham Darby.

Ironbridge is a settlement beside the River Severn, at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge in Telford, Shropshire, England. It lies in the parish of The Gorge, in the borough of Telford and Wrekin. The village developed beside, and takes its name from the famous Iron Bridge, a 30 metre (100 foot) cast iron bridge that was built across the river there in 1779. Before the bridge was built there was nothing there so it wouldn't have had a name. I was born nearby and still have relatives living there.

It wasn't called anything, because it didn't exist before the bridge.
