I'm totally freaking out about the government. George Bush has been signing executive orders left and right which grant him rights, essentially, as dictator in the event of a national emergency.

That's here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/05/20070509-12.html

Also, last week he signed an order that gives him the right to steal the property of any individual who 'threatens stabilization efforts in Iraq'. I've heard people argue that this only applies to people who use violence, but I don't buy it. What if he decided that this very question threatened "stabilization efforts"?

You can read that one here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2007/07/20070717-3.html

So what I'm asking, I guess, is am I right to be utterly terrified of the government? I can absolutely see a staged "terrorist attack" in the next few months which allows Bush to strip us of all rights and rape us as he pleases.

Tell me I'm not crazy.

You are not crazy, it is quite 'sane' to carefully scrutinize and question the policies of your government; especially if they are termed 'executive orders' or directives etc...

NSPD 51 / HSPD-20 establishes another massive increase in the bureaucracy for all of the evaluation and reporting necessary for it's implementation and also sets up a precedent for allocating unlimited 'national resources' to maintain government control of any situation it deems to be 'threatening' to either the 'interests' of America or itself.

Yes this is a little scary, but ambiguous enough to make any challenge to it (the bill) sound 'unpatriotic' or radically paranoid etc...

The Blocking Property bill does indeed make a direct link to 'violent acts' perpetrated against Iraqi interests, directly or indirectly. Is sedition to be considered 'violent' in these terms? The bill does not say, there are no examples given, and who knows what opinions will prevail after the fact... Again the ambiguity of the bill is it's defense from attack, as it doesn't specify what is meant by violence, the assumption is that it means physical force, up until it may not, etc...

These bills do represent a significant increase in arbitrary 'executive' power and yes we should take pause to consider the causes; socialism accrues power unto itself as a default and thrives when superficial and insignificant issues are elevated into emotional appeals for more regulation and controls. In any issue when the common man with the help and support of his friends (gang, group, party) has the 'power' to enforce his opinions upon dissenters, the resulting 'rulers' take advantage of this situation and contrive even more 'issues' and accrue even more arbitrary power etc... Eventually a significant issue is raised and there is no way of stopping the juggernaut of government, swelled by all of the itty bitty increases in power, from simply issuing a directive and seizing absolute control; all in the name of the common good, or the welfare of the underprivileged etc.

Be careful what you ask for, and even more careful of what you demand from a government...

you are losing it - the current president is not the only one in history to sign exec orders giving him sweeping power - look at FDR's record - remember that this country has a system of checks and balances - if someone challenges the EO - then the judicial branch gets involved and can overturn or nullify the EO

I think you're too paranoid about him -

if you aren't doing anything wrong then you have nothing to worry about - if you are . . .
