I live in central FL I just bought this house that has mature boxwood (or family)shrubs. I want to move them. I'm an idiot when it comes to this sort of thing so detailed instructions will help immensely. Is there a certain time of year? Prune first?

Yes, there is a best time to transplant and that is in late Autumn or anytime during the winter. Most plants sleep during this time and suffer from very little shock if any at all.
Use your shovel to cut a circle around the base of the bush. Start at about 2ft away from the base and move in if you have to.
After you have cut a circle in the soil reinsert your shovel and gently pull down on the handle to loosen the soil and roots. Do this all the way around. Keep working this way until you are able to free the bush from the ground. As long as the bush is dormant you don't need to worry about losing the soil from around the roots. Just make sure that you spread the roots out when you replant the bushes. Also, have the new homes ready for the bushes before you dig them up. Good luck

when trying to move them make sure ur careful when taking them out dig down far enough to get under the roots. u dont want to cut the roots. once out u can move it and make sure the place ur moving it to is far enough in the ground so all the roots are underground. and make sure the roots dont get to knotted up and arent in a ball when their put in the ground. it might not be as strong for a little bit because the roots were disturbed. it will be easier to prune it first because after its transplanted it will be to disturbed. try to do it while its warm but not with a really dry atmosphere preferably spring
