We're moving into a terrace house soon with 3 cats and are worried that they will run away. As they've been indoor cats all their lives, they're aged 9 years, 7 years and 7 months respectively, we're worried they won't know how to find their way back once they get out. What can we do besides keeping doors and windows closed and setting up high fences?

Just keep them inside, unless you go out. When you're outside, let them explore a little, then take them back into the house. I had the same problem living in the Smokey Mountains, after a week of taking them out and in, they figured out their boundaries, and came back every night!

Keep them in for at least a week, then introduce them to the outdoors gradually. It's best to keep them indoors, but if they escape outdoors you don't want "high tailing it". My aunt had an indoor cat escape for a couple of a days. They heard a racket a couple days later and it was the stupid cat making a racket at the door. The cat came ripping in when the door was opened and stayed on the litter box for about ten minutes. He couldn't figure out what to do without a litter box.
