You started off fairly well, but got lost in the minus signs You needed to add the -2x and -2x together to get -4x and needed to multiply -2 and -2 to get +4, not -4:

(x-2)(x-2) =
x^2 - 2x - 2x + 4 =
x^2 -4x + 4

No. Minus 2 times minus 2 is positive 4, not negative 4.

And -2x -2x = -4x

(X - 2) (X - 2)

First you times the first X on the rest on the (X - 2) next to it on the right.

So X *X = X^2 then X * -2 = -2x so write this down.

X^2 - 2X and that's the equation so far.

Now you need to times the -2 that was next to the X in the first parenthesis on the second (X - 2) like we did with the first X.

So -2 * X = -2X and -2 * -2 = 4

Now put that together with what we got when we did the first one and the equation is

X^2 -2X -2X +4

then combine the -2X -2X and you get
X^2 -4X + 4 and that is your answer! Keep practicing and it'll come easier each time.

(x-2)(x-2)

Use FOIL (First Outside Inside Last)
x^2 - 2x - 2x + 4
x^2 - 4x + 4

2007-07-23 06:50:32 · answer #5 · answered by Becky M 4 · 0 0

Using FOIL (First, Inner, Outer, Last)
We get

First: x * x = x^2
Inner: -2 * x = -2x
Outer: x * -2 = -2x
Last = -2 * -2 = 4

Adding this all up, we get

x^2 - 2x - 2x + 4
=> x^2 - 4x + 4

x^2 - 4x + 4 is your answer

(x - 2) (x - 2)
= x² - 2x - 2x + 4
= x² - 4x + 4

NB
- 2x - 2x = - 4x
(-2) x (-2) = 4

You simplified it correctly, but it is x2 - 4x + 4
You combine like terms (-2x & -2x) to form -4x and you multiply -2 & -2 to get 4

you have x^2-2x-2x-4
-2x-2x is -4x

the correct solution is x^2-4x-4

just a little arithmetic error, nothing huge. everything else is correct

(x-2)(x-2)=x^2-2x-2x+4-------( -2.-2=4)
=x^2-4x+4 ans-------(-2x-2x=-4x)
