All 13 original colonies had slaves at one point in time. When africans were first brought to america they had the same treatment as white indendured servants. But around 1740 Virginia passed a law that stated Africans were nothing more than Chattle, and could be owned without the possibility of freedom. But slavery in the north started to be abandoned after the revolutionary warbecause of the lack of need for manual labor in an industrial area. The Mason- Dixon line, the line between Maryland and Pennsylvania is pretty much what divided the north and the south. in the south Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, 95% of Americas blacks resided. 92% were in bondage.

All states east of the Mississippi were slave states. The slave trade was a huge part of the economy in New York City even into the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves only in the states in rebellion. The slaves in the Union states weren't freed until after the war.
