My boss is trying to fire me, because my daughter and his son ran off for a week without permission. I don't know a lot about the law, but I don't think he can fire me for something that has nothing to do with work. If anyone knows what the best thing I can do is, please let me know.

"At will" doesn't mean "at a jerk's discretion." If you were charged criminally for what your daughter did, he might be able to, but if not, since the cops won't hold it against you, neither should he. Why don't you sue him first? It was as much his son's fault as it was your daughter's. I'd beat him to the punch -- and find another job.

Bottom line is bosses will find any excuse to fire you to make it look like they did nothing wrong, and that you are the bad employee. Get a statement from him in writing, or get his son to testify for you. If he does fire you over this, file for unemployment and get a lawyer.

He can't fire you for something your daughter did! If he does, I would get a lawyer.

Definitely sounds illegal to me. Most employment is "at will", meaning either of you can end the employment at any time, but if you can prove that it was in retaliation for something, then it's illegal. Get a lawyer and sue his butt.

If you receive any criminal charges (failure to supervise etc) he could fire you for that. Otherwise, if he fired you for what another person (your daughter did) he could face a legal challenge.

first of all you are probably an "at will" employee... he can fire you or "lay you off" for anything he wants to "come up with"..you would have to PROVE he is firing you for the matter you've stated... guess what with out documentation to back up your claim..you will lose!
