Anything by Mary Oliver. Mary Jo Bang is excellent too but very experimental, so you have to have an open mind.

If you're a true poetry freak, you'll have to have a few "must have" books...
1. the Norton's Anthology of Poetry (covers poetry from Gregorian chant to modern day poets...in chronological order! So good it is used, along with the Harvard Anthology as a college reference book).
2. Best Loved Poems of the American People (compiled by a former editor of a major Eastern newspaper, it includes some of the most memorable poems you may ever read, including a section called "poems that tell a story". Trust me, this is one book you'll love).
3. The complete Poe. A collection of all his published poetry and an insightful look at his genius and his methods for writing poetry.
Just about any collection of poems by Robert Service, Kipling, e.e.cumming, Lewis Carroll, Sylvia Plath, Robert Frost, Walt Whitman...the list goes on and on, but these are always worth reading.
So, even if you can only get the first two on this list, I promise it will give you such a wide variety of poetry, spanning centuries and continents, that it would be difficult to beat it with just two books.
Happy reading!

Author: myself ( I'm looking for more people to read my work. This is not based in any wasy on a personal experience either. Just something i randomly wrote)
Pout, Grimace, Whine, Argue, Beg, skeletal Fingers form into frail fists, banging tables, shoving plates aside, silence, unwilling movements, small mouthfuls, gulping, uncontrollable, heart racing, increased, swiftly shoveling, ingesting, mindless blur….STOP! the clink of metal against smooth porcelain, spindly feet edging away, slowly, steadily moving, not daring to make a sound, not daring to be noticed…..the soft creek of a closing door, anxiety, worry, frustration, the slightest wrinkle upon a tormented hallowed face, sadness, obsession, the singular waterfall of rushing water, pounding heart, not loud enough, shower of water pouring steadily, pounding into the tub, frantic, retching, disgust…..and then….clam, serenity, smiling, satisfaction, a deep breath, a spritz of mountain fresh to mask the evidence, lights off, a quick brush, time for bed…until tomorrow.
