i think people make themselves disposable, to be honest with you. we choose our friends, our lovers, our jobs; if you choose a person who is less than likely to commit, then you can EXPECT to be disposed of. if you choose a job that is not serious about looking for a certain position then, again, you can expect to be disposed of. it's all about exploring options. and the only reason that those kinds of people are made more available now than they were like, 20 and 30 years ago, is because it's taught by society that it's okay! it's perfectly fine to have 60 different boyfriends/girlfriends before you're 25... perfectly okay to go through 10 jobs before we're 20.
i think people can resolve this with themselves by setting higher standards and goals. if everybody had that much respect for themselves, the world would not be so "disposable"... we wouldn't be an analogy to paper and plastic. :)
don't you think?

Yes the world has become too disposable.
Marketer's try to make new markets. And, disposable products need replacing and offer easy solutions.
The paradox though is how do you maintain a capitalistic society, protect the environment and sustain a world population that is striving more and more for a middle class or better lifestyle?
I am pretty sure that we will have to give up our wasteful ways or the resources will run out. And, then we will be forced to live in a different way. This change over will likely be a very painful one if we go via being forced to change.

No Beth, Thats not the case, Products more like benefits are getting disposable, not the emotions, not the people are getting disposable, life is short and has fast pace, you may be hurt by people's actions and behaviours but if you are good from inside and you care about people you are not disposable, I always believe that beautiful people have beautiful heart, Am I correct here? You need love, respect as a woman, you need someone's care, someone who is just for you. you need someone who is pure as you are, As long as your emotions are clear and pure, noone can dispose you, You are very beautiful woman, and I am sure you are beautiful from Inside aswell
Take care.

Oh yeah. In fact I had a friend dispose of me about 2 years ago while I was going through a martial separation and felt I needed a friend (some friend huh?). She totally ignored me, and when confronted she said I only call when I need her.
Umm, ok?
I don't like to think of myself as such, but I am sure, as with the example stated above, that some might think I am.
Kind of makes me sad!

Yup. We became disposable when greed became the thing that drives most people.
Those of us that are led by our hearts and always try to do the right thing get disposed of once we are used by our companies, friends, or whatever.

That whole mentality happened after the enlightenment. In the west, people stopped viewing humanity as a unity of body and soul, an everlasting soul made in the image and likeness of God. There was great skepticism, utilitarianism, relativism...people began to view humanity as no better than any other animal out there. Some decided humanity was worse than even the animals. Values were placed on financial security, survival of the fittest, materialism and rigid individualism. And he we are...suffering the effects of all of those ideas. People no longer have intrinsic value, life is not sacred and many people are only concerned with themselves, their interests and how to get ahead before they die...if they think about death. But, I think we can change it if there are people who work against these destructive beliefs and ideas.

The industrial revolution brought about a consumer society. It's not so much disposable but consumed. We discard and recycle. Before all that people needed to depend on one another and goods were made to last.

Yes, we are disposable. We are meat puppets. Our employers think of us as machines, and when we get broken, it's cheaper to just junk us and buy a new machine. Sometimes the same goes for relationships.
