In 1961 they put an asterisk next to Marris's name when he broke Ruth's record because Ruth did it in fewer games. With all of the controversy surrounding Bond's and steroids should he have an asterisk beside his name?

As much as I dislike Bonds, they can't asterisk his record without any proof that he cheated. That hasn't happened to this point, and you can't asterisk him based just on speculation.

Chipmaker's right...there never was an asterisk. Commissioner Frick wanted a "distinguishing mark" in the books, and didn't get even that.

When baseball first had an official encyclopedia, in 1969, there was no indication of any kind in the record tables or entries of Maris and Ruth of the difference of games played. I know...I have the book, second edition.

The official book of records does give the number of games, but does so for a lot of records.

No, there won't be any asterisk.

Those decisions are made by the commissioner, and Selig can't really put an asterisk next to Bonds when any alleged wrongdoing was done on Selig's watch.

Interestingly, the original "asterisk" was placed next to Maris' name in the record books in 1961 because the then-Commissioner, Ford C. Frick, was a very close, personal friend of Babe Ruth.

Today, you have Bonds about to break Aaron's record, and Aaron just happens to be a close friend of Bud Selig (hard to believe Selig has any friends at all, but Aaron is certainly one of them).

But no, there won't be any asterisks...Selig allowed it to get this far without charging Bonds with anything, you can't put an asterisk next to Bonds' HR record.

Though I disagree with Ford Frick's decision to impose the * on Roger Maris. There was a REASON for it. The record in question was a SINGLE season record and the parameters of a single season had changed from 154 to 162.

The record Barry Bonds is about to break is a career record. A career is still a career regardless of the number of games played.

Barry is hitting amidst controversy and accusations. Even IF he is found guilty in a court of law, he did NOT violate the rules of the game. Whether you like it... I like it... or ANYONE likes it or not: Those are the FACTS of this case.

If he did not break the rules of the game, but was simply a "JERK" why should his numbers be singled out?

So, NO they should NOT put * next to ANY of Barry Bonds records.

The Chicago Black Sox were banned for life after being acquitted in a court of law. There was zippo on George "Buck" Weaver. Some of them actually played a great series (Weaver and Shoeless Joe Jackson). Yet still, after decades of activism to get these guys off the permanently banned list, they are still there. Maybe I am wrong but I do not think that Weaver violated any rules, either, yet the man is still banned 50 or so years later. Bonds has cast a huge pallor over the landscape of baseball. He deserves an asterisk - he admitted to using HGH, the clear, the cream...but allegedly did not know what it was. Oh give me a break - are we supposed to be that stupid? Then again, most fans in attendance at MLB games are white so maybe he does think we are that stupid. Bonds should have an ** next to his name, period.

Since Maris never did have a real asterisk -- it is a sportswriter myth which you are free to stop believing -- sure, let's go do that, and babble for years, decades about the "Bonds asterisk" which never was.

Foo, the haters think it's there anyway, let's indulge their petty little nonsense.

NO !!!
lets see this record broken already

how many records you think you'll see in your lifetime.
500 wins by a pitcher, 300 losses, 30 win season, more championships than the Yankees?
we will never ever see these records, so let the Home Run record be broken

No because we don't know for sure how many are legit and how many are juiced even if he ever does test positive for steroids. Roger Marris case is different because its a fact that he did it in more games than Babe Ruth did

some thing alongside the lines of ***** Galore, Alotta Fagina (Austin Powers), Ivanna Humpalot (additionally Austin Powers) and Fook Me and Fook Yu (you guessed it, Austin Powers). Hmmm... how approximately Amy Feckalot? they could use Britney Spears' "in case you seek for Amy" (say it quickly some circumstances) as a results of fact the subject music. j0e

No asterisk is needed. It is still a 162 game schedule and he has not been found to have done anything wrong.
