do they have to pay x amount of £'s for a coffin, or can they supply their own ( plastic bag, cardboard box) Also, does one have to pay for the services of an undertaker, or could the family do it them selves, and how? is there a set price that undertakers are allowed to charge, or do they make it up as they go along? Genuine question!

My sympathy for your loss.
Went through one myself recently, but not in Britain.
As to your questions,(It all does depend on the local law.)
As a practical matter:
A coffin is not required.
Embalming is not required provided the cremation is timely.
The temperatures and amount of heat required and public health concerns make this not a 'do it yourself` activity.
The law may well require some verification as to the disposition of the remains.
Prices may be fixed by statute in some areas.
Hope this helps.

There are legal restraints upon families doing this, but my understanding is they let you use a coffin for showing, then afterwords creamate the body.

Years ago the price listed was $ 600, so it probably is higher.

Prices probably are fixed but I would shop around, I go into a computer store and the uppity clerk tells me no matter what I want done with my computer that $75 is the minimum price anywhere in town, sounds like the merchants are all in cahoots.

The laws vary from state to state, country to country. You would need to contact a local undertaker or crematoriumn. They should be able to help you with the correct answers. In the USA, most states require you use an undertaker. You dont have to have a coffin. You dont even have to pick up the ashes.

Mine is going to be done for free!

I am a body donor. They will take my remains to a medical school where I will probably end up being a specimen for gross anatomy.

After they are done with me (1 or 2 years,) the medical school will see to the cremation and either return the ashes to the family or dispose of them, as per my request.

It's a GREAT option if you are single and there is no family that needs closure.

Go to the nearest medical school and ask them about their "Anatomical Gift Program."

these decisions are very personal and private decisions basically if one decided they want to be cremated that is there decision usually ashes are given in an urn the [person can choose the urn they want or they can have a mini box which replicates the size of a coffin and they can decided whether they want them scattered or placed In a grave the DECISION is entirely yours you have to specify what you want in a will so if you wish for your ashes to be scattered then that will be done if you wish them to be p,maced In a Small box wooden casket then that will be done if you want a grave . then that can be done you have to make these wishes your self this is done inf a form of a will if you do this i mean put in a will then it will be carried other wise your final wishes may not be granted basically in my will i have put i want to be buried near gunners bury park mansion or near chis wick house which is where is pent happy days as a child . so yes put these fInal wishes ina will and it will be done a will is a legal binding contract and any final wish you want will be carried out make a will is my advise and put your wishes down.

I've been called wrong, but there are cardboard boxes that resemble wood.
An undertaker is required. The body must be embalmed soon after death.
One cannot DIY.
Pricing is usually competitive, but not set or controlled.
