Feels the top (fundus) of the uterus to determine if it's hard and round, like the head, or irregular and soft, like hands, feet and elbows.
Puts her hands on both sides of the abdomen to determine on which side the baby's back lies. The back is smooth and convex, whereas the extremities have multiple parts. Discerning the location of the back helps considerably in determining the baby's position.
Places a single hand just above the pelvic bone to feel for the head (round and hard) versus little feet, ankles and knees (irregular and nodular).
Also, see where you feel the most kicking--if you feel kicking high then baby is likely head down but if you feel kicking down low then baby is head up.

Your doctor can usually tell just by feeling around your belly, but they can also pull out a mini-ultrasound machine to know for sure.
Most people will tell you though, that at 31 weeks your baby still has plenty of time to flip around and change positions before settling into place.

At your next doctors appointment, ask if they can tell if she's head down or not. They know exactly how to feel for the back, legs and head. It all just feels the same to me. lol At this point and time, its not necessary though. She still has plenty of time to move about as she pleases.

don't worry the baby will turn in her own time but if she is breech talk to your doctor when you go to your next appointment they can feel for it but baby doesn't usually turn and stay for another few weeks but just ask your doctor wont mind feeling your belly to find out he just puts a little pressure and he can feel if baby is head down it is a little uncomfortable but at this point it shouldn't be anything new =) i hope this helps you!

Don't be too concerned yet. Baby still has time to position itself. Your doctor will be able to tell when you go to your next appt.
I always found that with Chiropractic care, my babies seemed to position themselves sooner. They (chiropractors) can use pressure points to help encourage the baby to get into position.

I know how hard it is not to worry however just try to relax and not be to concerned about it. Make sure you talk to your Dr. and ask all of your questions he/she will be your best source.
Most importantly you need to enjoy the time you can.
Congratulations.
