An umbilical cord normally has three vessels, two arteries and one vein. Your baby's cord probably had only one vein and one artery. This can be linked to a kidney problem which is present at birth. The doctors who examined your baby would have been aware of the missing artery so if they are not concerned about your baby I shouldn't worry. They would have told you if there was a problem. There is no reason why it should happen again.

Perfect question. I too just cam from the doctors office and was told I had one artery and one vein. They have set me up with a specialist's to do a level 2 ultrasound. As of right now I had a perfect ultrasound minus the umbilical cord. My doctor told me I have an 80% of having a normal healthy baby but there is a chance of having heart and or kidney defects. They also assured me that not only are they rare but most can be fixed with surgery. (The ones that can't are generally dectected early and they think they would have seen it at this ultrasound otherwise the level 2 ultrasound next week.) She did state that there was a 1-2% chance that I could still have defects that would not be dectected though.
Lastly I was told that I will be closely monitored around 30-32 weeks to make sure that the baby is growing properly and nothing is going wrong. I do not know your ultrasound results or how far you are I am 18 weeks but I am assuming you are in the same boat as me. Good luck and hopefully everything will turn out fine. They should monitor you more closely and hopefully you will get a level 2 ultrasound to ease your concern.
The chances of it happening again are rare as it happened during the development of the umbilical cord

Normally there are three blood vessels in the umbilical cord, two arteries and a vein. Occasionally there are only two vessels, a vein and a single artery. In those cases there is an increased risk of other anomalies, especially those of the kidneys and related structures. The risk of other anomalies varies from study to study. Your pediatrician may recommend the baby have an abdominal ultrasound. Sometimes not, the condition is just noted.

I am not certain that your risk is any higher in future pregnancies. I think not. Just make sure your OB knows about the situation.

Someone can tell you. You call that person 'doctor'.
Seriously this is the type of thing that not many people know about, so you need to ask your doctor about any possible complications in future pregnancies.

I am no doctor but I don't think so. I think it is a freak accident. but the best person to ask is your gynaecologist.
