Redwood is supposed to be weather resistant so finish might not be needed. The area I am planning to build the bench is is a desert environment so rain isn't a major problem.

We have a redwood bench that is probably 50 years old and was treated with a "redwood stain" to protect it from rain, snow, etc. I've been allowing the stain to eventually die a natural death and the wood that's been exposed to the elements still looks good, except for the graininess that may be attributed to the ice and snow over the years. I prefer the wood untreated.

I would be concerned about splitting and peeling. That's why I poly everything. But, you know best. And redwood is an outdoor product.

If by finish, you're referring to stain, it shouldn't be needed.
You still might consider a clear sealant.
