When I rescued (it) all his/her fins were gone. I think I see an ovipositor but I'm not sure. The betta is in a ten gallon tank and I am having trouble seeing under it. Is there another way to tell if it's male or female? Maybe a more trained eye can see something I don't. Here are pics of when I first got him all beat up and some just a minute ago. Maybe you'll be able to tell. He's kinda bright to be a female - but I really think I see an ovipositor - so am I just gonna have to wait till the fins grow out and see what happens? Thanks in advance.

He had been thrown into an Oscar tank - all his fins were ripped off by the Oscars. then he was put back in his sad little cup to be for sale.

yes- it was a Wal Mart rescue. One of the "shoppers' I guess, thought it would be funny to make him out to be food for the Oscars. I guess an employee saw it and removed it back to it's cup. It was there for a week like that before I bought it.
And I have seen some brightly colored females before. Vibrant blue, deep red you can't always tell by the color.

you can't see the ovipositor in any ofthe photos - that's the problem. I can see it when I get a glimpse of him/her from underneath but that's hard to do in a 10 gallon tank.

Great job, he appears to be coming along very nicely!
Knowing pet shop bettas and the betta mill bettas any Walmart usually carries, I would say it's a male. I have only very rarely seen a female in Walmart and when I do it's always a poor quality, mostly brown fish with quite poor genetics. That fish certainly has more color than the typical betta mill female and that makes me say a male in this case. A few more weeks of good treatment will certainly tell you for sure. Due to the ravages of how it was handled before you got the fish, the fact that it's stomach appears to bulge is in my opinion more a statement of lost muscle tissue in the rest of the fish than a stomach full of eggs.

My total uneducated, had bettas(male and female) but not an expert guess, I would say male. One, because of the deep coloring, the females can be brightly colored like that, but I don't recall seeing a female that blue before. And I know there's a bunch of different varieties of bettas, but the fins underneath, they go all the way back to the tail fin-looks like 2 seperate fins there. My female betta only has one underneath-which again, could be a different variety.
Fish looks like it's majorly improved from the first 2 photos-good job!! Poor thing, was it a Walmart rescue by chance?

WOW! You have done an AMAZING job of rescuing this poor little guy, I'm so happy for you! The betta looks so much better from the first pictures! But anyways, It is most definitely to me a male, so vibrant and bright in color....a female wouldn't be so colorful, they are more dull. To know for SURE, just keep up the good work of raising him and helping him grow back his beautiful fins and you'll know. His fins should be grown in completely in no more than 2 months.
By the way are there two little baby fish in the 1st "now" photo (bottom right), or are my eyes decieving me?
And after more looking, I saw 3 in the 2nd one!!!

The poor little thing!
I dont even look in the pet section at Wal Mart because I know I will want to buy them all. Ive written letters to the local one here and the HQ about how horribly they keep the poor things, but to no avail.
That is so sad! It is such a relief that you saved him!
Id guess its a male too. Very bright color,. plus, in my experience, Wal-Mart doesnt bother selling females.
I hope he comes around!

I'm pretty sure its a male. Females are never that bright in color. And the fins are looking more like the ones on a male.

wow----great job on that guy! i am pretty sure he is a male, mainly because the fins still look like they are growing. although they are now breeding females as bright colored as males so who knows. i didn't see an ovipositer but it may just be the angles of the photos.

He looks a lot better thanks to your rescuing! Great job and congrats. I'm pretty sure its a Male because the Male Betta's color sticks out more than Female's color. They're more beautiful than the Females.

wow, 10 thumbs up on what you accomplished with that poor betta
I personally think it's a male, because walmarts don't really carry any females
You are doing a great job on getting his fins grown back
Good luck

Look's like a male to me, Females are usualy dull in colour, and a males tail is probibly more likely to get nipped than a females short tail.. When you rescued it was it in its own tank?
ADDITION: My question to you is... why did you ask us if it was a female or male when you knew FINE WELL it was a male when you asked a question 2 weeks ago, EXTRACTED ' I was in Wal Mart tonight and saw a pathetic sight. A betta with no fins. NOT a female. They guy said one of employees thought it would look pretty in the Oscar tank ' So you knew it was a male... So whats the score?
