It's not a I, it's a L, meaning Low gear. There is a +/- button on the shifter to allow you to control the trans while in L.

I= Intermediate Gear
This mode limits the transmission to the first two gears, or more commonly locks the transmission in second gear. This can be used to drive in adverse conditions such as snow or ice, as well as climbing or going up hills in the winter. It can be used in aid in engine braking like down a steep grade or hill.

I=first gear, II=second gear, and so on, until you get to D, which means Drive, in the D position your tranny shifts through the gears automatically!!!
