My tank appears to be getting dirty more often than I have time to clean it. I've had sucker fish in the past that do a good job in assisting me clean the tank but never with a betta fish. I know male bettas attack one another but I didn't know if he would harm the cleaner.

Bettas get along with any kind of fish, as long as they don't have long fins
You could put as an example a cory cat in there but not a pleco
here are some pics with info on them

Check out the pics of:
Corydoras atropersonatus , (fairy catfish) or
Corydoras griseus

These have an adultsize of only 2"

Hope that helps

Cleaner Fish With Betta

You tank is big enough for a betta to live happily, but nothing else. Most fish that you can keep with a male betta are small schooling fish, and need 10gal or more. Any of the "algae eaters" generally need 20 gal or more, sometimes MUCH more. Also adding an "algae eater" doesn't clean your tank. It just adds more waste to the system, meaning you need to change the water MORE. Ian

The Betta won't care about any fish that just sits on the glass and sucks algae. The real problem is that the Common Plecostomus gets 2 feet long. And Algae Eaters get 8 inches and will attack the Betta. Any large snail would be the only thing you could have to clear algae. Otos need to be in groups and a 3 gallon is too small for them anyway.

No, your betta won't harm a pleco. Only a Clown Pleco could possibly fit in this tank- they only grow to be 2"-3". They will need aeration and a stable temperature of about 78F to avoid catching ICH. They're pretty, too, olive-brown with cream stripes, and only about $8.

He may attack for a while, but it won't last long. We tried to get a beta to kill a guppy in high school, but the fight didn't last long at all. They just get used to each other. What you have to watch out for is the chemistry of the water. Some fish will die off in the same tank as other fish because the NH3 levels are off. Talk to the folks at the pet store for more info.

Depends on your betta. My betta is in a 20 gallon tank with guppies and they are fine. He attacked at first, but he barely notices them now. I have a crown-tail betta and apparently they are the meanest, so if mine is fine, your's should be too. Besides, plecos (suckerfish) don't have any of the traits that betta deem aggressive; flowing tails, bright colors, etc.

Nononono if you are planning on keeping that suckerfish in there (pleco?) <-- they get HUGE. Try getting an oto catfish instead they are much smaller and do a great job with algae.

you mean a plecko? it depends on what type of betta fish you have, go to your local pet shop and talk to someone working with the fish, they will asnwer all of your questions. some betta fish you can, but others you cant.

nope. too small of a tank. feed less and do weekly water changes. i bet it is getting dirty because you feed too much. that can really foul up the water.
