Once while living in the country my parents decided to go "retro" where we made our own ornaments and cut our own tree. My sister and I went into the woods and chopped down a short really round fat tree and a tall skinny one. We lugged those trees through the snow and out of the woods. At home the short tree was too big around, and the skinny tree was too tall. After dinner my parents left the house to get a surprise. A while later they returned with an artificial tree. This was in the early 70's so getting one of those trees was a big deal. So much for an old fashioned Christmas. But I have great memories of that Christmas. I will never forget laying under that fake tree looking through the Sears Christmas catalog while Mom was making dinner. It always makes me smile.

We normally go to the cheapest tree place near us and cut one down... One year, we used an artificial one because my parents were out of the country right before Christmas so they didn't have the time to go out and buy one, so my grandma just bought a fake one and when my parents got home for X-Mas, they were pretty disappointed...
Overall, we normally cut down a tree... It's more traditional, they smell good, you can put up more decorations if you get the ones with the strong needles to hold the heavy ornaments, and it's not THAT hard to vacuum one room after the tree is taken away.

Once I moved out of my parents house, I have only had one real tree and I cut it down. But now I have an artificial one. Although, now that I am living with my aunt temporarily, maybe this year I can have a real one again!!!

Use to cut our own, but can't do that any more. Now, it's usually artificial unless I get a round of wanting the real thing.

I don't know of any in the chicago area but my grandfather had a scotch pine tree farm in North Dakota and the proceeds from selling the trees went to boyscouts of America. Farms have a big mixture of trees. Best thing to do is get to one early so you can get the best pick. Some farms will prune the trees so they are all in pretty decent shape, but they usually cost more for the extra labor. National Forests also let you cut trees (they mark the trees you can cut) and they are free. You can check with any local national forests in your area for info. Good luck!

Artificial. Today's quality artificial trees are much like the real thing, while being hassle and danger-free, and not at all messy. And you don't need to water 'em!

Yes, we go to a tree farm, and select a tree, use a small saw, cut it, and pay $10 for the tree. Pretty inexpensive I think, since pre cut trees cost $20 and up.

we go to artificial!
where i live people do not buy trees that are specially made to be cut for christmas they cut random trees that are so old and shouldn't be cut!
that hurts they do not understand how hard it is to raise such a tree!
so i go for artificial!
