Everything is grist for the mill to a writer. So society is a background on which his characters play out their story. He chooses the era, the setting, the situations from those which are sufficiently familiar to the reader that he does not need to spend too much time describing them. Look at how the best writers get you positioned in the social milieu of the characters with a minimum of description, just sketching enough for you to fill in with your own knowledge and experience.

This is why science fiction is such a tough genre in which to write. You have to construct the society, the physical environment, the laws of nature in some cases, in order to tell your story, but you don't want to slow the reader down with a lot of description. It's an art to write really good science fiction, for all it does not get adequate respect.

To me it influences everything. Emotion changes through everyday what happens in my life and the world. Society is distinct to a writer, also you can tell which period is in their life and about how the world affects them because of society or a certain age, and/or time.
