I'm not sure about WWI but in WWII, some British soldiers wore shorts while fighting in El Alamein.
In both wars, some Scottish soldiers wore kilts!

British infantry troops serving in North Africa during WWII definitely wore shorts as part of their uniform. I'm not certain about WWI but if they were in extremely hot climates it's likely they did then as well.

British soldiers wore shorts in WW2 in Africa and Asia where the weather was hot. German soldiers wore shorts as well in Africa.

Sure. Especially in North Africa and the Asian campaigns. I call it practical, as temps of over 100 degrees were fairly common.

There are dessert uniforms and tropical uniforms that consisted of shorts. The US and British armies did have a desert and tropical uniform that consisted of shorts.
