Because we know how WELL lower wages works for third world countires! Imagine: Even LOWER prices and MORE jobs available because poor desitiute employers can afford to employ you now!

Oh wait, or does the OPPOSITE happen when employers can suddenly be choosy (as in who will work the longest hours for the lowest pay) of whom they pick because EVERYONE (not just illegals) have suddenly turned into cheap labor! When the amount cheap available of labor goes up in comparison to jobs, unemployment will rise and working conditions will fall since employers will get to call the shots---any basic lesson in economics and common sense will tell you this. But don't worry, Japan may continue to outsource vehicle assembly jobs to America because our labor is getting cheaper and cheaper--we're worth less than a Japanese worker and are considered a bargain to them!

What sickens me is that a lot of the very people who couldn't have survived on the minimim wage of today, were perfectly OK with a fairer minimum wage that THEY benefitted from when they were young and starting out. Would these people be where they are now if they had to survive on the real wages of today that DON'T keep up with sky high inflation?

Minimum wage affects ALL wages, geniuses! Claiming that raising the minimum wage won't raise the wages of others is like saying that increasing the price of oil won't increase the price of products that contain oil!

To Cheffy: Higher wages results in "inflation?!" You won't find this theory in any basic text book on economics. And we are experiencing inflation right now, so what's the excuse now?

Wages are raised to KEEP UP with inflation--they don't CAUSE inflation. UGH!!!

Well why stop there, let's really do big business a favor and outlaw wages all together, along with health care and all of those other pesky things that come along with those great unwashed,
masses, namely employees.

Although, most of your rant tracks, you fail to mention that minimum wage has been at the same level for many years and the proposed $7.25 minimum still does not make up for inflation. The problem with the proposed minimum wage law is not that it raises minimum wage, it's that it allows the downward spiral to start again.

The minimum wage should be tied to a leading economic indicator like the Consumer Price Index. I've leased numerous commercial properties where the lease rate adjusted annually to the CPI, so it would stand to reason that if corporate America is raising prices IAW the CPI, they should raise their employee compensation with the CPI as well.

The reason that the Japanese have autos assembled in the US is not because of "lower wages", it's because by assembling in the US, they avoid large import Tariffs, and that is what makes it economical for them.

I believe that import tariffs should be imposed on any product or service manufactured by a US company overseas. Just as it created the incentive for the Japanese to create jobs in the US, it can create an incentive to stop US companies from exporting jobs from the US.

NO, and this is why...
Every decision made in our country (US) is driven by profits...PROFITS, PROFITS, PROFITS. That's the result of capitalism and free trade. As the rich get richer, the poor just get poorer. That was the whole intent by our forefathers, but that's a separate issue. As for the Minimum wage...raising it will help boost our economy, not decreasing it. By raising the minimum wage, it will encourage us to spend more and become consumers (which boosts the economy). Although that is true...as wages go us, so does the rate of inflation, and at our current pace...a raise in our salary of 5% / year (for the average person) is very deceiving as it really comes out to equal pretty much NOTHING. Either way, lowering the minimum wage will only cause us to consume less which will have a negative impact on our economy...the top priority should be on how to decrease the gap between the rich and poor in this country as it is the greatest out of all countries in the world.

Obviously their needs to be a balance, becuase the US is more wealthy they can pay higher wages, but this is in the interest of the employer too as people in the US by products, so the more they pay the their workers the more they can buy. However the unions have abused this and are really hurting many companies (i.e. Detriot car makers) As physical laborours who are not very skilled recieve high pay. So as I said there must be a balance between the third world, and the US becoming a country resting on its "economic laurels" because it still needs to stay competitive.

Minimum wage should be eliminated. Unemployment will decrease simply because businesses will be able to afford more workers at the market price. Prices will also drop (deflation) due to a tighter money supply and increased production relative to demand. As for conditions, an elimination or reduction in minimum wage would have no effect on working conditions as that is governed by other legislation.

The real pupose of the minimum wage increases under Johnson was to artifically inflate the base price of Union jobs relative to management in industrial state. In essence they were buying Union votes. The side effect is that it greatly contributed to the increased money supply and inflation that has resulted since. (and of course illegal immigration which is in effect black market labor).

I would say leave the minimum wage as is because very few people actually make the minimum wage to start with. For example, where I attend school in Michigan, most low skill jobs have starting wages a few dollars above minimum wage ($7.15 an hour).

I think a bigger concern another post mentioned is that some people are overpaid in professions like car manufacturing. There is no reason someone without a college degree should make $35 an hour to make cars.

it would certainly remember on the organisation. With small organisation vendors, particular, it ought to enhance jobs, yet with firms that are in simple terms undeniable grasping, lowering the minimum salary could mean a greater earnings for the CEO's and additional money for inventory holders. it incredibly is a case of you're damned in case you do, and you're damned in case you do no longer.

Free trade has caused the death of the American middle class, illegal migration has done the same to the lower classes. While some other things are contributing to this, they were all caused by those supposedly smart Ivy league elites (lawyers, lobbyists, politicians, MBAs...)
