My daughter is 3 weeks old and on the news I heard that there is going to be this flu epidemic thing going around. Is this something to be very concerned about? Do babies get flu shots? Will a flu shot prevent her from getting this flu that is going around?

i believe the other posters are correct they have to be at least 6 months, if you are concerned make sure all of the rest of you in the home get the vaccine to lessen the chances of the baby getting the flu.

the flu shot helps prevent the flu, but it is not 100%. my husband has to get the shot every year (he is navy) and he gets so sick from it. i have never had the shot, and i have also not had the flu. not sure what that means, guess i am lucky!!!

If the baby is over either six or nine months old (I forget exactly which at this moment) they can and should have it. If your daughter is three weeks old now, she'll be a touch too young at the start of flu season(we start giving out the vaccine in mid-October) - meaning you need to take other precautions (including vaccinating everyone else in the house, minimizing exposure to places where there are sick people, being dilligent about hand-washing, etc.) until she's at least six months old. Studies have shown that if someone gets a flu shot late in the season, it'll still be effective for the remainder.

However, the other reality is - the flu shot does not protect against EVERY strain of influenza - only the ones that the CDC determines to be the most prevailent of the year.

Her doctor will tell you when she needs a flu shot..you shouldnt have to tell them. Yes 6 months is when my son got his. Since she wont be old enough to get it, you and her mother really, really should get the flu shot. Now that you have a baby you and the mother need to get one every year along with her when she's old enough. Depending on how bad the strain is...it changes every year and last year the flu shot didnt even work for the strain. Babies and children, along with the elderly and people with diseases and respiratory problems can actually die from it..there immune systems arent developed enough or strong enough as children, babies and the elderly,it attacks your respiratory system. She'll be okay, just keep her away from anyone showing signs of a cold and especially during my sons first winter..I didnt let strangers touch him...people like to touch babies hands and play with there lips...who knows where there hands have been or if they wash them.

Our doctor gives flu shots to babies, but I'm not sure at what age. Ask your pediatrician when you take her in for her 1 month or 6 week check up. My granddaughter got only the sniffles after her shot. Have a blessed day.

After they are 6 months old they can have one. Our baby wasn't old enough for it last year so we skipped it. I am breastfeeding and she never go it.

First and most important thing to do when it comes to your baby's health. Talk to her ped. He will know what to do and do the right thing. Dont trust anyone else and if you feel unsure talk to another ped.

They can, but I don't recommend it! We don't do flu shots and we are healthier than people who do.
