I've heard that the best place to buy pet fish was from smaller pet stores that have more people that actually care about the fish rather than from a bigger chain store such as PetsMart, Petco, or Walmart, but I want to know which type of stores sell their fish the cheapest and the best quality? Thanks!!

Well in combination to the other two answers, you have advantages and disadvantages to both. One of the first things I'd say though, is that you're more likely to get a better breed and more healthy fish from locally owned and operated stores, as well as more likely to get better advice. Those kinds of stores are more likely to make thier bigger end profits on equipment and medications though. I like chain stores for supplies, but when it comes to stock, I'm sorry but chain stores are just that, a chain store, and losses in thier stock mean very little to thier bottom line profit, and they just replace them on the next shipment. I prefer local stores to buy the stocking of fish from, because they are usally very experienced breeders, and you might pay a few more bucks for the fish there, but you're getting much better quality and probably a wider variety to choose from.

When comparing these 2 with a general answer the small local fish store is by far the best. The small local fish store has knowledgable staff that can give you advice and help you so you're fish will survive. The chain store hires kids because they'll accept minimum wage and since them make more money on selling dog food than the entire fish department they could care less if the employees know anything about fish or not. Even if the local fish store's fish cost significantly more than the chain store the local fish store (LFS) is more likely to have locally bred and raised fish, less likely to be diseased, more likely to give knowledge to help you become successfuly in raising the fish. If you received a fish for free and it brought a disease to your tank and killed the other fish then I guess free was very expensive. If are sold a fish that won't work in your aquarium then not getting that advice was expensive. If you have to buy medication for a diseased fish then that usually cost a lot more than the fish savings. I can go on and on though the main point is that you need a pet store that has quality stock and employees that can help you. This will help you succeed in the hobby and save you a lot of money in the long run. Support your LFS.

I think it just depends on the smaller pet store if you go in and check it out thats what makes the difference. If it is from an only fish selling store then yeah they care an awful lot about fish, know more. The pet store i found is expensive though when medications at petsmart are so much cheaper. :\

Usually the smaller stores have really good quality stock, that don't cost a fortune, but then bigger stores like PetSmart move in and make the smaller, better stores go out of business. And it also depends on how the store is doing financially.

The fish will be a little more expensive (maybe 5% more than at Petco or Petsmart), but the privately owned fish stores have much more informative staff, much healthier fish, much cleaner tanks, and their fish will generally last a good bit longer than chain store fish.

no. we smaller stores dont always get the discount for bulk buying. however.. we do know more about our fish and how to care for them unlike a place like WM who is getting out of the fish business because they figured this out.
as for caring for our fish yes we do because not buying in bulk means we have to watch for illnes get it and treat it or we dont make money and smaller pet shops have just as much work to do as large chains and not the large sums of money deal with it.

In the smaller stores you pay more for the fish, but they have better quality as well
So what would you go for, quality or price?
