Does walking alot really help to move things along or is it just an old wives tale?

Walking may make you more comfortable near the end of pregnancy, but there is no proof that it will induce labor. Your body will start when it's time. Or the the doctors will induce you if other medical reasons require it. Just make sure you drink plenty of water. Dehydration can cause contractions to start/speed up, and you want your contractions to start by nature, not by force.

It can definitely help move labor along but does not induce it. Walking will only help further dilate you and move the baby down, but if you're not already dilated or in labor, then it won't do much for you. It is very good exercise though, so even if you're not in labor it's still good to do plenty of walking.

I think that question is kind of up in the air. When I checked into the hospital I was already 3cm dilated. The doctor advised that I walk around for 1/2 an hour and then get back into bed. After 20mins I was having stronger contractions and when I was checked, I was 6cm dilated. I am now 32wks and plan to walk a hell of a lot to help my labor progess whether it helps or not. Good luck!

Hiya chick.
Walking wont induce labor, if it hasnt already started. The baby will come out when he or she is good and ready.

If labour is established, then yes it will help, as gravity plays a part and obviously the baby is head down ( hopefully) and as you walk about then he/she wont be going back up!
Also when laying donw in labor the baby tends to press on the back a lot, and walking about helps him/her stay off the back.
Hope this helps
xx

i believe walking can possibly help you out a bit with labor but not completely. With my first, I walked for 3 hours at 37 weeks and lost my mucus plug the next day and went into active labor the next night. It might have been coincidence but I don't know. Doesn't hurt to try. Walking is a good excercise during pregnancy too

it may not move things along but it will help your muscles down there get strong for when it comes time to push the little one out. i've heard that walking while in the early stages of labor helps ease contractions, but not that it will induce labor.

Maybe it just depends on the person.

I hear walking to induce labor is only effective if you're already starting to dilate.

it can help, the downward pressure of the baby's head on the cervex can help wiht efacement and dialation, but it will only happen if the cervex is ready for it. Its a difficult process to bring on labor naturally, but walking will help you, and keep you active and flexible, which will aid you in labor and delivery. Good luck
