7 answers

2x - 5 = -4x + 7

add 4x to both sides

2x + 4x - 5 = -4x + 4x + 7

simplify

6x - 5 = 7

add 5 to both sides

6x - 5 + 5 = 7 + 5

simplify

6x = 12

divide both sides by 6

6x/6 = 12/6

simplify

x = 2

A. Move all X to the same side of equation, to do that do the same oppositive mathematical operation at both sides of equation. (Example add 4x to each side).
2x - 5 = -4X + 7
2x - 5 + 4x = -4x + 7 + 4x
6x - 5 = 7

B. Move all contants to the opposite side (Example add 5 to each side).
6x - 5 + 5 = 7 + 5
6x = 12

C. Let the x alone! Since the x is multiplied by a constant, divide for that constant at both side of equation..
6x / 6 = 12 / 6
x = 2

2x - 5 = -4x + 7

2x - -4x = 7 - -5 (2x +4x = 7 +5)
so 6x = 12
because the sign changes when you move it to the other side of the equals sign

therefore, x = 2
