I timed it so that I would get pregnant, then my period was late, I took a HPT & it was negative. Then 7 days after my period was supposed to start I had a sudden onset of very bad cramping, low pack pain, little nausea & bleeding with clotting. It lasted a couple hours, then went on & off for the rest of the day. The next day I feel much better but my low abdomen is very tender. Could it have been a miscarriage?

It is possible but since the test you took was negative then it is unlikely that it was a miscarriage. It sounds more like a late period or an anovulatory cycle.

Hard to say. If it was a miscarriage....you were still pregnant and would have had + hpt.
Make an appointment with you obgyn and let them know you are trying (if you haven't already). You can get a game plan started with them. Then if you have any problems or complications getting and staying pregnant they will be able to monitor it.
