Pokemon, in Japanese, meant "Pocket Monsters," referencing either how the balls could be shrunk in the show, or how early Pokemon toys (mostly key chains) were often put in pockets.
If you're wondering about the canon instead of the translation, most Pokemon game intros say something along the lines of
"Pokemon are creatures that live among us. We humans live among Pokemon as friends. At times we play together, and at other times we work together. Some people use their Pokemon to battle and develop closer bonds with them."
So you could think of Pokemon as pets, but pets that can fight.

A pokemon is a fictional group of animilistic organisms that were created by nintendo. The name stands for poketmonster. Essentialy pokemon are animals. Though in the pokemon universe they are extremely obedient and are often able to perform supernatual feats (shooting flames, creating rock slides. making it rain) in the pokemon world these are not considered to be extrordinairy. People tame pokemon and use them to battlle/breed/beautify all sorts of things that you may do with regular animals (always seemed odd to me that pokemon battling seemed like glorified *rooster/dog fighting)

it is really called a pocket monster. pokemon for short. they are creatures you catch in pocketballs pokeballs for short. you catch them and then you battle with them with otherb trainers. when you beat someone your pokemon get experince. exp for short. when they get enough they will get a new level. every level it takes more exp to evolve it. when you get to a certain level he will evolve into a stronger pokemon. i hope this helped any more questions email me at hoopboy0713@yahoo.com
