I take it that you are of the opposite persuasion.

Perhaps you can give us a little anecdote relating a conversation with one of "those people" that you find it difficult to understand. What's your point...their counterpoint...how did you listen to try and understand each other?

So you are saying you can with an argument with an atheist? Debating religion and politics does not produce winners or losers. If someone has a strong belief one way or the other you will not change their opinion in most cases. The best you can hope to achieve is a mutual respect for your right to hold your chosen belief.

Sure you can.

First, just believing in God does not automatically make someone irrational. Fanatics and fundamentalists are just a small percentage of the people who have faith.

I'm an ordained minister. I'm also an attorney. And I freely acknowledge when someone makes a logical argument that is better than mine. I've had debates with other ministers -- and as long as we remain respectful of each other's viewpoints -- many are quite willing to concede a debate.

On matters of faith, there is often no single right answer, so "winning" depends on whether you at trying to get them to agree with you that your point is valid, or trying to get them to admit their faith is invalid. Very different likelihood of success.

But it's only fanatics and fundamentalists that are so wrapped up in their beliefs that they use their faith as a justification for everything -- and fortunately, that's a very small percentage of people in any religion.

Yep. Religion is a conversation stopper. You can prove for fact that the world is one way, but that persons invisible friend tells them otherwise you will lose the argument.

Religion makes non-negotiable claims about the world and preaches intolerance of other peoples views and life styles. I would have no problem abolishing religion in this country. I know it's unconstitutional but it would erase so much hatred and ignorance in our country.

The time has come for us to STOP respecting peoples religious beliefs.

Don't feel bad about your lack of understanding about those who believe in God. The Bible clearly states that without the Holy Spirit the things of God are not understandable. Those who have received the Holy Spirit through the grace of God understand it completely. It is perfectly logical, but it will never make sense to you until you are saved also. The sad part about it is that if, on the day you die, you have still refused to believe, you will completely and immediately understand it, but will find yourself irrevocably "on the outside, looking in" and there will be no second chances for you from then on. God gives you unlimited second chances while you're alive, but he must shut the door to you once you are dead. We are made perfect in God's eyes, through the blood of Christ and the fact that we believe it completely, by faith, so that when we come into his presence, we are unblemished, is what allows us in. No imperfection is allowed in heaven, ever. To allow an unbeliever into heaven would be to introduce sin into heaven, where sin has never been present. That would be intolerable to Him and would ruin paradise for all who are there. We'd sure like to see you there with us, but not as you are now. Gaining entry is so easy, but first you must swallow your pride.

I think your approach to someone who believe in God or any other matter is basically pointless what I try and do when debating a person is not really to change their mind because that rarely ever happens, I find the the best thing to do is have them explore and examine their own conclusions.

Even they dont believe archaic superstitions, Its a hold out.

A vulgar, reactive hold out, but they "know" as much as anyone else.

Look at the smear answers against you. Christian? Kind? Neighborly? Of course not.

If the beleieved in a "god" their answrers wouldnt be so belligerant!

Christians feel the same way about atheists, I think most people like to argue for the sake of debate, very few people actually think they will change other people's beliefs.

Debating/arguing with people of other beliefs forces you to think through your own beliefs and find logical ways to defend your position.

You cetainly might be able to win an argument with a Christian, but you can not win an argument with God. He is the Truth. The Truth is always right.

Yeah, just like you can't win an argument with someone who refuses to admit 2+2=5 is wrong.
