Because it's one of those "unknowns"
Some people think they know what will happen and some people pretend to know what will happen but the reality is nobody knows. It's sort of like walking into a cave with no light source.....you don't know what you're going to find in the cave.
There are only two possibilities.
First possibility - Nothing happens. You're consciousness fades and there is nothing left but a rotting corps for the bugs to feed on. (what some people are afraid of)
Second possibility - You're consciousness is able to exist outside of your body. I don't mean going to heaven or hell either. Simply existing outside of your body. (what people hope for)
I'm going to hope for the second possibility myself. I hate to use the word "faith" but it's all we have. I don't mean faith in a higher being but faith that life continues in some form or another. Faith is just the belief in anything that can't be proven.

Some are and some are not. Its mostly the fear of the unknown, and the permanent nature of the state of being dead. As people grow older and start to ache and feel bad all the time, and after witnessing and bearing the trials of living on this planet for 60, 70 , even 80 or 90 years, they become less afraid and accept their fate and even welcome its arrival.

I'm not afraid of death, I'm only concerned about the fact that I'll no longer be with my loved ones. I'm not worried about the pain involved with dying, or the afterlife, but only about how it will feel knowing that I'll never again be able to hold my little girls.

Because we are afraid of the unknown, the afterlife, we don't know what will happen when we die. All we know is our lives here on earth, our friends, family, etc. It's hard to think that one day, all will cease and life will be over for us for all of eternity.

idk. . . i guess its the fact tht everyone will die eventually. and most ppl know about god and heaven and believe tht when you die you will go to heaven and be w/ your father and then youll be in a better place. but even knowing tht, i think ppl worry tht there might not be a heaven and once they die, theyre just gone forever. and then theres the ppl who dont believe in god or anything like tht. and they worry about whts gonna happen when they die. so it just depends on the person and wht they believe in i guess.

Because they don't know when or how. No one can describe it. And it's the end.
